K means Kilometer

A kilometer is 0.62 miles, 3281.5 feet, or 1000 meters.
A mile is 1.61 kilometers or 5280 feet.

This is an example of a 10K run

K Miles Fast Pace Medium P Easy Pace
10 6.21 70 min. 100 min. 125 min.

As opposed to our old style 5280 foot mile, the Europeans, using a standard meter of 39.2 inches in length, have then multiplied this basic length to measure larger distances.

10 K refers in shorthand to ten kilometers or 10 times 1000 meters.
I believe the length of this particular meter was a bad choice; but the system has logic in its development thereafter--as in the Olympics where 100 meters,110 meter high hurdles, 200, 400, 800, 5,000 and 10,000 meters are run, etc. The 1000 meter distance is used in some athletic meets, but no other metric distances are presently part of track and field in the Olympics.
