change the schedule at the last minute (tells a person on sunday night that they have to come in monday morning instead of afternoon or calls in the afternoon trying to make you work the next day (which you are off)? Why is that the employees have to follow the schedule but the boss doesn't have to and expects me to just keep changing my plans to fill in for the employees that call in or to help my coworker because they took on a project and promised it in an unrealistic time and expect me to come in a work my butt off to help them. They just called me but I missed the call and I know that when I go in today (early because they changed my schedule) that they are going to try to take my days off but I have plans for both days and an important appointment that I was lucky to be able to reschedule after having to cancel at the last minute because of the first work schedule change. Should I just tell them that I have plans for the next 2 days or what?

That's rediculous. The schedule is the schedule. Sometimes things change and people have to be called in at the last minute, but that should be the exception not the rule. They can't take days off your schedule because you didn't work one days when you weren't scheduled to work. You aren't at their beck and call. Can you complain to someone above your boss? If not, quit.

They can change schedules based on company needs, but if this is happening all the time, then they're not doing a very good job of scheduling. It's not illegal, but maybe it's time for you to look for a new job.

Get caller ID and don't answer the phone if they call you - you can always pick up the message if they leave one, and call them back if you can work the new hours. As to the appointment that you already have, if they want you to work last-minute at that time, tell them you have an important appointment and can't come in then.

Be aware that if you aren't available to work when they need you, they can fire you.

I am a manager and I personally believe that people's personal time is far more important than work time, but I have found that I am in the minority in that. I can say that we get tremendous pressure from our bosses to fill insane work schedules and often times we are left with little choice other than to ask people to work off days or late. From your discussion, it looks as though you are probably one of the more reliable and dependable employees at your company. I would also guess that you are one of the more skilled. This means that you are unfortunately the first go to person in your boss's head. It is not fair that the best workers are often penalized for their competence, but it does happen more times than not. I would keep working hard and try to move up in your workplace. It may even be helpful to bring it to your boss's attention that they rely more heavily on you than other employees. If they won't ease your hours, maybe you can get a raise. If it becomes too much of a problem, I would just find a job somewhere else. Sorry for the long answer but I hate it when this happens too!! :)

Talk with your co-workers about this.
Don't be played against each other.

Don't take calls when you are off.
Don't accept holidays taken when you simply did not take a holiday.
Don't accept schedule changes 1 day in advance. Simply tell them you have made your plans based on the schedule. The schedule is the schedule. Refuse to discuss your plans or even say what they are. Even if your plan is to do nothing all day, it's still your plan.

Once you talk with the other workers, ask your boss together how far in advance the schedule can still be changed. You both need to play by the same rules.

If your company has a human resource department, go talk to them. If they won't give you satisfaction, quit and find another job. No company owns their employees, despite the fact that many of them think they do.

you should find a new job. your boss is being unrealistic. tell him that you can't miss your appt. he'll just have to find someone else to fill in.

Try monster.com and get their input reagrding your questions and then learn to stand up for your rights and have a legitimate fight. Make sure you have enough support from your co-workers.
