It seems when people can't think of a better insult for the men and women who lay their life on the line every day the bash them for hanging out at donut shops. That is not true anymore. I see more cops at Starbucks than donut shops, and they are never holding a pastry. They are just enjoying a well deserved cup of coffee. Let's show a little love for the people you will need someday and your life may depend on them.

It's one thing for collegues to poke fun of each other it becomes insulting if you are "out of the loop".

By the way I know what a cliche is and any phrase that links cops and donuts together is cliche as I pointed out originally, They hang out at starbucks hence the connection of cops and donuts is meaningless

Nah. Cops like donut shops. Firemen cook elaborate dinners. Teachers are underpaid. Politicians are crooked.
All stereotypes have some basis in truth.
Donut shops usually offer free coffee to cops, and are open all night.
Firefighters often have plenty of free time between fires, and cannot go home for meals during their 24 hour shifts.
Teacher salaries are disproportionate to their responsibilities.
Politicians are crooked.

Doesn't bother me so much when people use the cliche to insult or put down the police. I just think of how unoriginal and, usually, unintelligent someone sounds when they throw out the word cop and donut together. Honestly I think I can count on two hands how many donuts I've eaten in my life.
Besides I thought that the International Police Conspiracy Association established that they were to be identified as "Police Pastries".

And whoever thinks that donuts were associated with police because police are generally obese, you are off the mark. Years ago the only establishments that were open late night or 24 hours a day were donut shops. Which was why police frequented donut shops, thats all there was. Please at least do a little research before you throw out generalizations.

EDIT: Power rings!!! Classic, I love it.

That's not entirely true. I've seen a few cop vehicles in the parking lots of Tim Horton's every now and then. And once, I saw a cop come into another Tim's franchise in my hometown to take an order. Maybe if a cop were diabetic or watching his figure....

Relax, I would never use the donut thing to insult a cop. In fact, if I were their secretary, I'd be going out and fetching donuts for them.

I have been a police officer for eleven years and I still get donut jokes from my close relatives. They love and respect me and still they do it. They really think it is funny.
It has become so cliche that it really doesn't faze me too much.

Don't forget about the person who points to his buddy when you walk in somewhere and says " take him away officer" and then laughs like crazy.
Or holds out his hands and says "take me away"
It's all well meaning though, and I usually smile and laugh and say "good one" like it's the first time I've heard it.

I'm in an inner city area and dunkin donuts is the only place open on overnight shifts on my patrol. So indeed, I spend alot of time there. Plus they have clean bathrooms. Those are the first 2 things that good cops find on patrol. Safe food and clean bathrooms.

Yes, I've been tired of this cliche, since the first time I walked up to a checkout with some donuts (in uniform) and the clerk joked about me supplying the police department with their drug of choice.

It's old, it's crap and people need to come up with something new (and accurate)

My husband just laughs at them. The cops and donut cliche' is so over done it has lost it's effect. besides it is usually some stupid punk showing their intelligence (or lack thereof really).

Dude, relax...I think even police officers have chuckles over the cliche.

And it isn't necessarily untrue either.

I'm a teacher, and I enjoy a good donut now and again, so go ahead and start a joke about donuts and teachers....I would have a good laugh!

When I worked at McDonald's we gave the police free food and coffee, since they came around alot it was sort of free insurance and security for the store.
