I think they can learn all about water safety and get comfortable in the water from very early on. But, they're not really ready to learn to swim until they're at least 3. Kids develop differently, so you should find out from a certified instructor what they think of your child's readiness. Most YMCA's and community pools offer some sort of class for kids of all ages.

I don't have any kids, but parents can start 'teaching' their babies to swim very early on - before they turn 1 year old i think. There are baby & mommy swim classes so baby gets used to the water. As far as doggie paddle - well when the child is about two or three at least and swimming underwater, when he/she feels comfortable doing so.

Average probably 8-9, depending on where a person lives and their access to a pool and/or swimming facilities.
Where I used to live we had a swimming pool and I started taking my son in the water as an infant and got him into a swimming program at around age 5, but there are programs that start as early a 6 mos (with the parent participating also) that get babies used to being in the water and build up to swimming based on the child's comfort level with being in the water.

i would not say tehre replaced into an common age because it relies upon on the baby. in case you advise unassisted as in without arm bands or a boyancy help, i could say 6 or 7 yet some babies take to swimming like, pardon the pun, a duck to water. and a few are not interested in swimming in any respect! in the united kingdom, a great variety of faculties do swimming training and that they often initiate in 3 hundred and sixty 5 days a million, that's age 5/6. i think of a few initiate them in reception reckoning on the college, that's age 4/5.

We've been taking our children to the pool since they were toddlers but wouldn't go down the lesson/tutor route until they were over 4 and able to communicate with confidence. Try a 1 on 1 session with an instructor before joining a group lesson.
