I was in the US Air Force from 2000 to 2005, and while I was in the service they had to release 18,000 members from the service because, as they claimed, the Air Force was over-manned. I did find it odd that my job as an aircraft maintainer went from being under-manned to over-manned in a 3 month period, and I personally believe they released this many people because they just couldn't afford to pay them.
Although military service is a great way for an 18 year old to get more life and world experience before going to college or an after high school jobs, there is absolutely no way the American government could afford to fund a draft. The military budget is already larger than most other countries combined, there is just no need for another increase. The money it would cost to instate a draft could be used for so many other more important things, like saving lives instead of taking them.

While I don't believe that we should re-institute the draft, I do believe that we should have some form of Federal Service that would allow our young people (18-22,) who have graduated high school, but either can't afford college, or who do not wish to attend college, and can't find suitable employment to contribute to our national pride.
I would go further out on the limb and say that after the two to four years of service, they could get the equivalent to the GI Bill, or could gain the skills they need to make it by in the world.
I also think that this would be great for people who are new to our country, and want to gain citizenship. After two to four years, (if the have a valid green card,) they could be one step closer to their dream, all the while learning about our country, our communities, and our way of life.

no. i served 8 years in the army, and believe me - there are already enough people there that volunteered to not want to be there. the military is stretched thin, but that's what happens when the democrats downsize and the republicans throw them into combat. forcing people to serve would start the 60's all over again, and i am not ready for that! stupid hippies. and let's be serious - the only ones that would be drafted would be the one's financially incapable of buying their way out of it, or lacking the right connections to the right people. and if it would happen, would women be susceptible to it as equally as men? bad idea, all the way around.

YES...
We have too many people yelling about their "rights" but are unwilling to defend those rights.
We have too many illegals coming to the USA wanting the good life and yet are unwilling to defend it. If we had a draft, we probably would not have such an illegal problem today.
Two years of national service is not too much to ask of each citizen.....And it would certainly reduce the number of idiot civilians running around who are clueless as to what the military can and can not do....

I think the draft was a good thing for our country. It took all of us young men away from our families and home towns for 2 or 4 years and put us into a melting pot of our diverse society. It was an equalizer. I was in the Submarine service. We all had to learn to live together and take care of each other no matter what our background was. Clothes, wealth, color, etc. ment little. What kind of job you did was what ment the most.
It was the best and worst experience of my life, but all of us had to experience the same thing and it was good for us and our country.
Going into the service was good for me. I was a high school dropout. My home area was racist and democrats. We were poor. I thought republicans were some kind of cult. The service taught me that there were good people of all kinds of backgrounds and I learned to respect people for their values only. I also learned my value and went out and got a good college education with my service benefits which allowed me to go much further in life than I would have otherwise.

No the re-enlistment and volunteering is suitable for what we need them for now...it would take a larger conflict to get the draft re-instituted.

Absolutely, even our top generals have said that are military is over stretched to dangerous limts. So going by their own assessment I would say we need a draft yesterday.
Let's put some of that good ole american partiotism to a test.

No Way No How!
We don't need a bunch of grumbling slackards in todays military. We are spoiled with inteligent motivated troops that give a darn and respond to mission changes and needs without crying to Momma.

Yes. Reinstating the draft would make the war more unpopular than it is now. The draft was a major factor in the unpopular Vietnam war that we left.
