Because he realized that he had been foolish up to that point, He realized that there is a God, and he could know Him through the Lord, Jesus Christ.

A J Ayer who was a convinced atheist all his life actually had an NDE towards the end of his life in which shook this conviction. He apparently wrote a chagrined letter to those he had led in his beliefs suggesting that perhaps he had been wrong. His wife commented also that he had been a ''lot nicer since he had died" ....Apparently it changed him and his beliefs.....after this he was far less sure of what he had professed all his life. So seek the truth; don't try to prove what you want to be true, but seek..... :)

I'm afraid it doesn't matter much what he did on His deathbed. I'm not a firm believer in deathbed conversions.

But to answer your question. Again I would quote Romans 1:18-20 They know there is a God, but they choose to suppress the truth in their heart and they are without excuse because God has made himself evident to even them. When your on your deathbed all of a suddenly denying the truth seems rather foolish when deep down inside you knew He exists all along.

Bless the Christians for not reading more than "there was an Italian preist at Russell's deathbed." This is true. When asked if he (Russell) had anything to confess he said this:

"Yes, there is one thing. On one occasion I had a visit from the Emperor and the Pope simultaneously. I took them to the top of my tower to see the view, and I neglected the opportunity to throw them both down, which would have given me immortal fame."

This is the extent of his "repentence." Gotta love Lord Russell, drole to the end.

This is the first I heard of this. I'd like to see a link.. if you have one that is.

I've been searching, and cannot find a thing. Bertrand spoke several times of others' deathbed conversions, but I see nothing that suggests he had one himself.

Proof please.

He didn't.

So I suppose a better question would be, "Why do 'religious' people always feel they have to LIE to make a point?"

Hey! Let's go to Mr. Russell himself for the answer:

"Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes."

I've never heard that he did. Got a source on it? Or is this another one of those silly "Darwin converted to Christianity on his deathbed!!" things?

Maybe he realized his plight. Spending his life denying God, only to realize that deep down, affirmation of the existence of God had already happened years ago.

Either that, or he just decided to take Pascal's wager. But I hope he had a sincere heart.

Sometimes God finds people in the strangest places as the exact moment that he feels they are ready to listen.

Probably for the same reason that Jesus became an atheist on his deathbed when he said something like "Father why hast thou forsaken me?".
