As far as insurance is concerned, it's considered to be a cosmetic procedure. I don't know about the tax thing.

It is not a cosmetic procedure per se, but most health insurance plans do not cover it. It is considered an elective procedure. Most heath plans limit the amount they will pay for any vision correction, if they cover any of it at all. For example, they may pay for an eye exam, and a limited amount for glasses. If you want more expensive glasses, you must pay the difference.

Seeing as it is a medical procedure, the cost can be tax deductible if you meet other IRS guidelines.

No, Lasik is not considered a cosmetic procedure. If you get it, you can deduct the cost from you taxes as a medical procedure.

Because your eyes can be 'treated' with cheaper contacts or glasses, then most insurances consider anything more expensive as cosmetic.
