Because the Bible is like 'Opposites Day'.

We know from science that people had very short life spans back then, but the authors of the Bible put their thinking caps on and decided they lived a very long time, being the geniuses that they were.

Whatever the Bible says, the opposite is true, except for the exceptions.

God created Adam and Eve Genetically perfect, back then, diseases and viruses and such did not exist not at first, as time went on, and the genetics became more diverse, and polluted, the life span decreased.
This is consistant with the 2nd law of thermodynamics, meaning all things tend towards decay and degeneration, which is a valid arguement against evolution, we are not evolving into better creatures, but worse, only our minds have gotten better as far as technology, that too is spoken of in the Bible. (2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. )

another explanation is this:
the Bible correct about this especially since that our lifespan now, even with technology, is around 70 to 80 years. There are two possible explanations for the longevity of the early people of Genesis.
First, they were so close to the original genetic line of Adam and Eve, that there health was exceedingly great and so they could live this long.
Second, it is noteworthy that the lifespan of people drastically shortens after Noah's ark. The theory is that there was a covering over the earth, a canopy of water vapor that helped shield the earth of harmful cosmic rays. The Bible tells us that the firmament opened up and it rained for 40 days, covering the earth. There is no biblical account of rain prior to this time. Therefore, some theologians believe that after the flood, after the rain fell and the atmosphere lost a lot of its protective qualities, then the lifespan humans was drastically shortened

Moses died at 120 years old. Adam and Eve lived 100s of years because before the flood there was a different earth.

A mist covered the earth and there was no rain. One of the reasons why building the Ark was so ludicrous to the people in Noah's day.

many many scientific answer to go by.....I think that the earth rotated much much faster then....and using Einsteins Relativity theorem we can see that the faster a person travels, the slower time goes by for that relative person...this would mean that everyone on the earth would be moving at close to the same speed (well at least all in Israel/Egypt) so they would be moving very fast. There are many scientists that believe whole heartedly that the earth used to rotate very fast, which is believed to have caused the magnetic poles to switch as many times as it did, and then it could have began slowing down and now the poles do not swithc quite as rapidly..........this is what Einstein explained. I think that they lived longer to have more children and populate the earth. After the Earth began getting populated, they stopped living so long.

EDIT:
Oh yea...like others have now pointed out. This was regarding the pre flood peoples more so than the others after them...preflood earth was WAY different than ours.....thorns and thistles just recently began growing up from the ground. There was an actual Cherubim on earth guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden with a flaming sword.....no rain...so therefore, no clouds....this is why so many people believe that the earth rotated MUCH faster then..

Adam lived 130 then he had Seth. Then Adam lived another 800 years. Adam became 930 years old. Then in Genesis 6 we see the next.....My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal, his days will be a hundred and twenty years. Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died. Deuteronomy 34. God Bless

Most timeframes and ages used in the Bible are simply to show periods of time. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt for 400 years (a VERY long time). They wandered in the wilderness for 40 years (a long time). It rained for 40 days and 40 nights (a long time). God created the world in 6 days (a short period of time). It's all relative.

In Genesis we read about a "firmament" which is a layer of water or ice that is around the earth as another layer of our atmosphere.

Well science today, shows us, that this would create an oxygen chamber effect on earth. This is also backed up by ice core samples and amber findings.

This would also explain how plants were bigger, bugs, animals and even humans. As we can see that if we put something into an oxygen chamber, then it will grow larger, longer, live longer, be more healthy, etc.

This would explain how Noah, Moses and others lived a long life. This would explain how Dino's got so big, as a reptile never stops growing during its life. Now put that reptile into a oxygen chamber type life, and you get what we deem as BIG Dino's.

When this firmament collapsed, this is what cause 1/2 of the water for Noah's flood.

God told Adam if he partake of the originl sin, that he will die the day he eat thereof, Adam lived to be 930 yrs old, That was within his day which is 1000 yrs. No man has lived longer then 1000 yrs, But in the Milliennium Man will live without sickness & they will go over into the eternal age, Therefore a day is the same AS a thousand yrs.

Wickedness in the World

Gen 6
1 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that these daughters were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with human beings forever, for they are mortal [b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years."

God shortened the life span of humans because of the wickedness. The sons of God are the fallen angels, who were having sex with the human women, which produced giants.

It was God's original purpose (and still is) for man to live forever.
He created the first human pair, perfect and designed them to live forever. He placed them in a garden paradise and told them to fill the earth and subdue. This was God's purpose. After Adam and Eve sinned they lost all that. They began to age,get sick etc and eventually died.As their offspring all mankind now age and eventually die. However the closer to the beginning of mankind we go the more perfect man still was and therefore still managed to live for hundreds of years. And then we come up to our time where we can only manage to survive 80 years if we're lucky?
The Bible does promise, however that Jehovahs purpose will be fulfilled and mankind will again have the opportunity for eternal life on a paradise earth in the very near future.(Ps.37:9-11,29;Pr2:21)
