how do I get a battery out of my thermometer?

I have a baby thermometer. i don't have the instuctions anymore. the battery died and i got a new one. i can't get the old one out. I went on the company website and they don't make them anymore. i called the company and the number is no good. I don't want to break this thing trying to get the battery out.

Grip the thermometer each side near the push button then pull the cap of right on the end then you will see the battery compartment.~~

thermometers usually contain mercury, be very careful because that stuff will make you sick, and it may be a carcenegenic too
