In the Old Testament, God ordered the Israelites to: “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites” (Numbers 31:2). See also Deuteronomy 20:16-17, “However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them--the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites--as the LORD your God has commanded you.” Exodus 17:16 proclaims, “He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation." Also, 1 Samuel 15:18, “Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.”

The "god" we don't understand in the Old Testament was the Powers and Principalities. The same as the We in the Qur'an. The first word for god in the Old Testament is Elohim, which means more than one god.
Powers and Principlaiities has a negative connotation. But it just refers to a government structure in the spirit worlds. Both good ones and bad. (In the Bible).
The Powers and Principalities have authority, because God lets them do things under thier care. But not everything they do is a direct COMMAND from God. The Word says the Hosts of Heaven are going to get some lay-offs too!
I read a book called Psychic Self-Defense. Dion Fortune said someone gave her a buddha statue. One day, she said HI to it and went up the stairs. Immediately she sensed an evil presence, and turned and a light came out of the statue and started following her. She said a evil person must have owned it and put some negative energy of some type into it.
That helped me to understand what I couldn't understand before. Why The Powers commanded the Hebrews to take nothing from other cities. Because they were polluted on the spiritual level, and would have hurt them, since they were cleaner. More attuned to nature and spirit in those days, than we are today in our noisy cities.
As far as outright killing the people. I'll leave that up for discussion.

This was only for the children of Israel who were to be God's people that served Him in the temple. God wanted Israel free from all temptation of evil.
Today, we have a powerful armor of God to keep sin and idolatry away. Read Ephesians 6 in the Bible. Put on the full armor of God to protect yourself from the schemes of the devil.

Many of the cultures that surrounded the Israelites were polluting the land with their beliefs. Why do I use such a strong word as polluting? They believed in burning their children to death. Others used sex in their religious rituals. Others had sex with animals. It wasn't just the possibility of being tempted, it was the fact that those cultures were aggressive about spreading their wings, and subduing other cultures, conforming them to their ways.

Yes that cosmic clown did that all the time. Just to fill you in on what cassandra was saying about those adorable gnostics, here’s the story…
Sophia, mother of the holy angels, had a miscarriage and gave birth to Ialdaboath (aka Yahweh). This monster then stumbled across the matter of the universe (chaos). Then he said “Behold, all that matter, and it’s all mine! I AM GOD, and there is no other!” But when his mother, the holy Sophia, heard this, she quickly descended down through the Aeons and appeared in a mist, saying “Samael [means god of the blind in Hebrew], you lie, for there are many greater than you.” And she then gave him a slap across the back of the head but it didn’t stop him, so she sent her son [the cosmic christ serpent] to take care of him, to kick his butt all the way to hell, and no one has heard of Yahweh since.

Sure, there were circumstances when God allowed or even commanded certain tribes to be killed because of their disobedience. The OT is full of sometimes pretty shocking stuff. But that is not what we need to get from these stories. There are lessons to be learned. One of them is that we are not to rely on ourselves, but on God and Him alone. It is His grace that gets us through not our own accomplishments. And that's why Jesus Christ came and died for our sins.

He did that with some specific cultures. I don;t recall a specific command to destroy all who did not believe as they did.
