When a parent passes by with their child and says "If you don't behave...that man there will put you in jail," I respond with how that's not a good thing to tell a child! This leaves a bad thought in the childs mind about police doing nothing more than place people in jail which is the furthest from the truth. Police frequently provide assistance to the public that goes beyond the scope of placing people in jail.
What I have done is a "show and tell" as part of a public awareness program which allows people to visit the jail to see what it looks like and how uncomfortable it can be living in such confined quarters.
I will also let people handle a pair of handcuffs and try them on if desired.
There is nothing wrong with a "curiosity" of the profession and any officer would enjoy telling anybody about their job!
We just wish to insure that the message is given in an appropriate manner or forum!
Best wishes.

No frankly it would be a waste of time and resources.
We are a smallish town. So we don't have a dedicated detention officer. So we only hold people for a short time. And during that time, an officer has to keep an eye on his inmate. So that ties him up and it puts a strain on the other officers if a call comes out one isn't available.
Not to mention the liability concerns.

If you are that curious, find out when your local department is having a open house, their you can ask all the questions you want and see and touch the equipment the officers use. usually the jail and a patrol car are the most visited.

No............and many of the answers here are the same that I would give. Many a parent has said that to a child misbehaving in front of me. I usually tell Mom/Dad not to say that. I also proclaim loudly so the child hears me that I would not do that. Police officers are not parents for problem families...........be a better parent don't expect me to be the parent for you because you can't control your child.

The answer is real simple. No.
If I cuffed you, and you hurt yourself while cuffed, I will be fired. You will sue me.
If I put you in jail and you get raped, beaten, murdered, I will go to jail. And your family will sue me.
Handcuffs are not toys. Jail is not a curiosity. The Police are not here for your amusement.

No.
At the least, it would be an illegal detainment - at the top it could be aggravated kidnapping. Detainment is a serious action, it is not to be played with.
And no, don't ask to see my gun, either.

you are not allowed to do anything like that.most cell hold multiple inmates. it is too much of a security and liability risk to place you inside with them.some agreemnet might be able to allow you in some empty cell

The answer would be a resounding NO. The only way we can cuff you and stuff you is if you break a law which warrants it.

that would be a waste of taxpayer money and police resources. so i would head to the donut shop instead, and then go harass some college kids, and throw them in jail for being drunk.
