Well if you are talking about the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagisaki (they were the only "Atomic" bombs!) they main reason was to showcase american military superiority, demorilize the people of Japan , coax Japan to surrender, and to preevent the need for a U.S invasion of Japan whic would have cost many more lives.

there are only 2 resaons.
1)other countries have them, so without one, they would have greater power over those who don't.
2)slightly reduces the risk of war/invasion to the country with one.

But they are an awfull weapon. And should never had been built at all. But now they are arround, countries like us(uk) and america can't give them up as they help keep us safe. But lets hope they are never used!

I'd rather tell some reason against:

1. It's rather stupid to think anything at all could be achieved by throwing one...
2. It's tremendous waist of energy
3. It creates worldwide pollution which nobody can escape in
a long term...
4. It's simply inhuman to kill thousands of Innocent people !
5. If you send one over, you're bound to get one back !
