Here is your answer: If you signed but have not shipped to initial training in whatever service it may be it is easy. You go see your recruiter, tell him or her the reason you want out, be prepared for them to try and change your mind. It involves a little paperwork and for them to discharge you. No harm, no foul, nothing happens to you. If your already in training or at your first duty station, your in for the duration. In addition I would think long and hard if your ever going to join again, be firm in your commitment if you sign up.

You can get a Hardship Discharge or even an Entry Level Separation. Certain branches make it easier for soldiers that just can't hack it to get out. The hardest branch to try and leave early from is the Marines. You basically have to extensively prove the "hardship" or go insane to get out of that branch.

ETA: A hardship would be something like a parent being diagnosed with a terminal illness and the soldier is the only living relative. Something like that. You'd have to have doctors letters, medical charts, etc to do that.

ETA 2nd time: You can get out for serious mental illness but it will forever be on your record and hamper the chances of a later career in law enforcement. Don't try this way. You don't want to ruin the rest of your life.

I am guessing you are still in the delayed entry program...the government has not invested anything into you yet, besides a few hours worth of paperwork and maybe a physical. You can just tell them you've had second thoughts and don't want to go to basic.

If you've already gone to basic, however, it's more complicated...

heres how im doing it right now. i started seeing a counselor after i had decided that it was time to get out. i tried to make it work, i had wanted to get out since ait but didnt just want to quit. yeah i still hate it. anywho, i was lucky to have a GREAT therapist who is putting a lot of his time and energy into helping me escape. maybe my situation is rare, but my therapist called a meeting with my commander, himself and myself and my supervisor (i was training to be an air traffic controller at the time) and we had a meeting about my depression and inability to adjust to military life. long story short my commander isnt an *** and hes helped me a lot with this process. all i have to do is sit and wait for battalions answer, which we believe will be positive too. hope this helps, but yes its possible

Depends on the service...however, if you choose to "fake" your way out...realize that you risk DISHONORABLE discharge, (which will screw you in the long run) and a LONG wait to be out processed. I only know of the Marine Corps...other branches may be easier to weasle out of.

You can get pregnant, a lot of females get out for that reason.

There is also a rumor that you can get a general discharch if you make too much money, I think it is like 50K.

You can get fat and fail your Physical Test for god knows how long...

How about, you get yourself into a lot of trouble and they will give you a dishonorable discharge.

Or as a last resort, your can get shot and die...I

f you want more information, go to your military personnel flight...They will let you know...hopefully.

This is important...have you been sworn in? If you have not had that happen then there is no contract. It usually happens at the MEPS station.

I just talked to a buddy in the Army last night and he said that this guy just told them that he was going to kill himself if they didn't let him out of the Army. So they let him get out.
