Someone I know is giving away two free 1 year old boxers. One male, one female, both house broken. Is having two dogs o.k.? I am a first time dog owner and would like some advice. I am getting mixed comments from people around me. Thanks.

As a first time dog owner, I would advise you to just get one. Mainly because you are not experienced with training yet and with two boxers, it will be difficult. But the main reason, of course, is expense. Two dogs are expensive.
Having said that, two dogs would be wonderful. I would advise you immediately enter obedience classes, because they will walk all over you.
If you have the money, time, and patience... and want both dogs, then good for you. You will love it!

I have a two year old boxer that I adopted when he was 1.
He was actually living in a foster home with his brother and a few other dogs when I got him and I'm told that they got along ok. Only problem was that the brother was a bit more aggressive. He would take away the food and any playthings that the other had. He was the only dog with us for a year until we adopted a female Rottweiler who is about 1 and they get along great. Both were a little weary of each other at first but its been about two and a half months and they seem to be the best of pals. Good luck.

Male / female is the best combo as far as not getting into fights goes. Both should be altered however if they are not already.
Do you have enough space, crates, love, time for walks, and $$ for food, vet bills, and obedience classes (usually done one-on-one, and with dogs that large you definitely need to take them)? If so forget about what other people say.
That being said, these are fairly large dogs and you do need to establish control. (Remember the obedience classes - these teach you to give commands, and the dogs to OBEY commands, thus they learn to respect you as pack leader.)
It is possible that they will bond with one another rather than with you; therefore taking them (one at a time) to obedience helps you build a one-on-one relationship with each.
Read all you can about the breed. Most boxers I know are sweet dogs with an incredible sense of humor - they are marshmallows inside but due to sheer size can be overwhelming.
I would find out exactly why the previous owners are giving the dogs away, also. If there were issues with chewing, barking, agression, as a first time dog owner you might want to pass if you are not up to these challenges.

Boxer dogs make excellent pets. They are not aggressive dogs. If you are getting 2 and you have never had a dog before, it will be hard. One thing you don't have to worry about is the houstraining. But still Boxers are rather large dogs and need to be walked for exercise.
Don't even get them if you plan on hooking them out on a chain when you are not there, or when you don't feel like walking them.

If you have a large yard and walk them regularly yes. If you subject them to a life of inactivity then no, you will only give them shorter lifespans. If boxers dont get enough exercise their legs, spine and back start going out at an early age and you then have to put them down.

As long as you have the space, time and $$$ to take care of them there should be no reason not to. It would be a good idea to have them fixed, if they aren't already, to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

I have two dogs and a cat - they get along just fine.

Good luck and enjoy!!

As long as the two dogs gets along. I have three Doberman Pinschers & a rescued mutt and they all get along just fine. The Dobies didn't want to accept the mutt at first, but now they love her just like she is a little Dobie herself!!!
