I am going to Hangzhou, China to teach English this summer but the school there says that I must pass the physical exam that the government authorizes. I'm not sure what the requirements are to pass the physical exam, do you know? I am visually mpaired, my vision in both eyes is 20/200 corrected with glasses. One of the main reasons I want to go to China is because there is better transportation in China then the United States where everyone has to drive a car. Where can I find that material on the physical exam requirements and would I pass the physical exam to teach? Please let me know what you find.

What I mean is that they require me to take a physical/medical exam to get a health certificate, this is performed at the local hospital in Hangzhou. Is there a visual test done, because I don't know if I would pass because my vision is 20/200 in both eyes and color blind somewhat. If they do then I think it is disrimination since I earned my TEFL certificate and degree to have nothing to show for it.

According to the embassy website, the exam is to check for AIDS, infectious tuberculosis, or any STD. I doubt they care about vision impairment. What *I* want to know is exactly what tests do they need done? Could you email me if you find out?

Hmmmm, next year I will be going to China for a year and the Visa requires me to have a medical (I am from the UK, may have different rules about it?), could this be what they mean? I'm sure eyesight won't be a problem as most Chinese people wear glasses too. I don't know what you mean about transportation....there are lots of cars in China, but lots of bikes too I suppose. Find out your visa requirements first and try to find out what the school actually means. Good luck! I will be in Beijing for 5 weeks this summer and am really lookin forward to it!
