Try to sing from your diaphragm. Also, finding out your vocal range might help.

If you're tone deaf you're pretty much out of luck. If you can sing in tune, but just aren't very good at it, then you can learn. It takes a lot of boring exercises, a lot of listening, a lot of practice and a lot of constructive criticism. You have to learn to control your breathing and not sing through your nose or in the back of your throat. Don't try to do all those fancy runs pop singers do. That's for later. Just start with the basics and work your way up.

Your best bet is to take choir in school, or enroll with a voice coach for private lessons. They'll be able to honestly tell you if you have anything to work with in the vocal department.

If singing isn't in the making for you, then perhaps try to learn an instrument.

Realizing your horrible is the first step to getting better. Some people don't even know they're bad!

Work on matching pitches, projection, breathing (through the diaphram, which means your stomach should widen and your shoulders should not go up), and proper vowels. All those things make a HUGE difference in your singing. You'll probably need to find a vocal teacher, though.

Get professional training. If you're in school, join the choir. If you're in college or university, take a singing class if the music dept. offers one. If you're out of school, look for an adult ed. class through the local schools, the local community college, or at a music store. Try looking for a Sweet Adelines group or Barbershop Quartet in your area, and ask if someone there wants to make a few dollars on the side as a vocal coach, or knows of a singing instructor.

Take some private lessons.

A vocal teacher will give you an honest assessment of your voice, and teach you techniques on breathing, pitch, and projection.

If you are going to invest in lessons - you MUST practice or you will just be throwing away your money.
