I agree with the previous post. Bedford Avenue is one of the longest avenues in Brooklyn, so it is impossible to give you an assessment without having more information.
Although Bedford-Stuyvesant is not the greatest place in Brooklyn, it has certainly cleaned up it's act so to speak in the last 5 years or so. In fact, I live about 6 blocks from the projects on Marcy Ave that one previous poster has mentioned. I'm a white, young proffesional and despite not being in the majority in the neighborhood, I have never had a problem.
Bedford-Stuyvesant was one of the worst areas in the city in the 80s and much of the 90s, and I think people haven't been back ever since. A lot of change has been made in the few years that people have turned their heads. It's not *that* bad.
Also, the suggestion to stay away from any neighborhood with "heights" in it is also a suggestion I disagree with. Brooklyn Heights is probably the most "Manhattan-ized" neighborhood in Brooklyn. It's just as nice, if not nicer, than most parts of Manhattan.

Ok, there is an AREA called bedford stuyvesant which is located in Brooklyn---it is where most of the poorest people live and is a very, very dangerous neighborhood. My daughter did community service there about 6 years ago for her prep school and two people got shot on the streets while she was there. The only time the students were allowed on the street was with the priest, who everyone respected in the neighborhood--she served food and taught kids at a soup kitchen/and church school--Please google the street and see if there is just a street named Bedford and it is NOT in bed/sty neighborhood............go to hotels.com and look for a room IN THE CITY- meaning manhattan---it's much safer.

Bedford Avenue is a huge street that runs through a lot of neighborhoods. It starts (or ends) at Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay (about midway between Ocean Avenue and Nostrand Avenue), it goes through Gravesend, Flatbush, Prospect Heights, etc and ends up (or starts) somewhere in Williamsburg. If you mean Bedford Avenue, more information is necessary.
I disagree about Bed-Sty - parts of this neighborhood are absolutely gorgeous - and expensive and as "safe" as any other place in New York City. There are luxury hotels and bed and breakfasts in multi-million dollar brownstones. There are bad areas here, too - I wouldn't want to be close to the projects on Marcy Avenue for example.
Whoever advised you to steer clear of any neighborhood with "Heights" in the name is wrong - Dyker Heights is one of the best neighborhoods in Brooklyn, many well-to-do residents, great pizza, bakeries, restaurants, houses, etc. Dyker Heights is a great place to live.

i agree with Mac, this could be in Bed-Stuy and that is one of the roughest places in New York to be. Nearby is Brownsville and East New York which make up the terrible trio of neighborhoods.
History? - Back in 70's, maybe even the 60's, this whole area became subject to riots and was burned and looted till nothing remained. All the honest people left and only criminals remained. Combine this with the Crack epidemic of the 80's and the area just never was able to recover to once grand stature.
Progress in this part of the Brooklyn moves at a snails pace

although bedford is currently becoming a better neighborhood it is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in brooklyn. too much violence and crime. i think there are better areas u could pick. stay away from crown heights, bedford styveson, propect heights, anything that ends in heights is not a good area. but keep loking on craigslist.org for rooms/shares and ur sure to find something .
