You didn't say what year your jeep is, but if you have a digital display, the milage is stored in the vehicles computer, when a new speedo is installed the speedo will show actual milage, as the display is only that, a display. Or with a program you can download the info onto your laptop.

I have a 2000 Wrangler with about 170,000 miles on it and it's doing fine, but I have owned it for the last 100,000 so I know how it has been maintained for that last 100K. I use it almost exclusively off pavement. Oil and filter are changed every 3500 miles, air cleaner cleaned and oiled every other oil change. My point is if the Wrangler has been maintained properly it has a lot of years and miles left in it. All that said I NEVER recommend Wranglers as daily drivers; they are fun and great off-road but the mileage is somewhere beyond horrible, the ride is harsh at best, passenger and cargo space very limited, wind and road noise excessive. If you decide to go ahead and get it take it for an extended test drive. Get it on the highway and a moderate speed deliberately hit and bump or small pot hole to see it that starts the front end to shimmy( a fairly vicious vibration) it's called Death Wobble and is fairly common in Wranglers. Typically corrected by balancing the tires specially if it has over sized tires. If it has 4WD you will want to make sure you can shift the transfer case in and out of 4H and 4L. You can shift from 2H into 4H on the fly but going into 4L is a little tricky. I'd suggest you pull up the 2006 Liberty owner's manual on the Jeep website and find how to shift the transfer case it's the same as the 2000 Wrangler you are looking at. I know I have one of each.

No the only way to get any reading of mileage is to have a operational odometer. Most likely you will need a new odometer but im not sure if you need to buy the whole gauge cluster or just the odometer. You just have to estimate how many miles you drove.

Yeah, you could buy a handheld GPS receiver. My Garmin has an odometer function on it, as well as MPH and a bunch of other functions. But you'll spend more for that and the batteries you'll be using up all the time, than you would for the repairs.
Don't be a cheapskate - get it fixed.

If you do a search the title you can see what the mileage was when the car was sold. If it was taken to one garage for service the usually keep records of what the odometer read when it was serviced.

If you knew the miles per gallon you were getting and knew exactly when it quit working . You could calculate the gallons used with the formula of miles per gallon to get a rough idea.
