cartoonnetwork.com is my 6yr old sons favorite site. but he has also tried these:
http://kids.yahoo.com/games
http://home.disney.go.com/games/
http://www.nickjr.com/
http://resources.kaboose.com/games/
http://www.kidsgames.org/
http://www.playkidsgames.com/

I have even made a special link on the desktop that goes right to the site so that way he can get right to the games without much help

Club penguin,
and the usual people have mentioned. I think if you search there are a lot of free science experiments on line. National Geographic I think has a kids site as does NASA. Also if you go to the library there should be wonderful programs. my kids love the Magic School Bus software. It has solar system , dinosaur, volcanoes programs to name a few. there is also a great and fun program that teaches how to play chess ( I'm addicted to that one!) I think it is called Play Chess. it won't let you advance until you master each concept. My 8 yr old creamed his 10 yr old cousin and gave his G"Pa a run for his $$$ in an actual game!
