toyota corolla, chevy s-10, honda civic - you don't mention new or used nor a price range which makes it kind of a guessing game.

You didn't mention new or used - but if you're looking used - consider a Ford Taurus. there are so many of them out there, the price for a used one is very low - they have great safety ratings, and should be reliable. Also slow and dull, which combined with the safety makes for a good car for a young man.
If looking new - I would stay away from a car like that - the depreciation that makes it a good used car value makes it a bad new car value. If new - I would say Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Scion - all very reliable and will hold value well.

I have had very very good luck with Chevy Celebrity's. They are all old but they are very reliable and they are easy to fix. i have had 2 of them one was an 86 and I bought it in jan. 2000 and drove it for 7 years with minor repairs. Now I have a used cadillac but I will be going back to a celebrity after this one. They are so dependable that GM had to stop making them and I was getting 30 miles per gallon. Go figure.

A Honda or Toyota, around 2000 model.
Even if the car has around 100,000 miles on it, it's still good for his college career. Those cars get good gas mileage, hold up well, very dependable. That should be your most economical buy.

I go to college and I have a toyota corolla. It is economical, and is very trustworthy, and isnt the most expensive car to fix. Also, the tyres are usually the cheapest size.
