The prodigal son. I appreciated the idea that the father not only welcomed the son home, but "killed the fatted calf," and made a big party to welcome him home publicly. No slinking in the back door for his son!

I've been an atheist all my life, but I have read the Bible many times, and as a child I especially enjoyed it. I spent many hours on the porch, whiling away the summer days reading. There weren't a lot of books in my house, but I did have access to the Bible, and so it became my book of choice. Ironic, isn't it?
My favorite stories would be Joseph and his coat of many colors, especially where his brothers ask for mercy and Joseph states that none was extended to him when they threw him down that well. And then he reveals himself to his brothers and all is forgiven.
King Solomon and his wisdom, especially when approached by the two women fighting over the baby.
The Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son.
The book of Luke, and the birth of Jesus. My favorite book in the Bible however would be the book of John, with verse 15:13 being my favorite. "No greater love a man has than this, that a man give up his life for a friend."

As a kid I thought it was all BS, because my nutso father switched religions every 2-4 years and tried to drag the family along with him. I didn't become a Christian until age 20 -- before that I was a very thin-skinned agnostic. So I can't help you much, but your question gave me a chance to blow off some steam, so I did!

I commend your dedication to giving children a proper education. Whilst I do not read the bible myself, might I recommend 'The Selfish Giant' by Oscar Wilde? It really is a magical story and, although it is not biblical in nature, it might as well be (baby Jesus is one of the main characters).
Thanks!

I am particularly fond of the one where children were teasing an old man, which annoyed god... so he sent bears down from the forest, and killed 42 of the children.

don't diss this because i'm not christian :) my stories are straight from the torah (old testament)
i liked the story of samson.. about how his hair gave him power, and that in the end he sacrificed himself in order to kill the enemy.. his last line="my soul shall die with plishtim".. i'm sorry but i don't know how to translate that word.
i also liked the story of iftah.. where he swore to sacrifice the first thing that he sees in order to win the war (again with the plishtim). it was sad because he saw his one and only daughter.. so he told her what he promissed god and she said she wants to be with her friends before she dies.. then he ended up sacrificing her and he won the war.
there were many more but these were my two favorites. not because they are about death, but because they show kindness and self sacrifice..the second one can also teach you about promisses. i probobly wouldn't know why then, but now i do :D.

I am not religious now, but as a child, the story of Job was most inspiring to me.
