check your enclosure for structural problems ie; loose joints ,etc, and just on a side note you can fry a sub in the wrong enclosure immediately.

Try putting a thin layer of weatherstripping between the outer edge of the sub and the box.

If you're not already familiar with it, weatherstripping is the material one can put around a (house) door where the door closes to make it harder for outside air to get inside. If your nearest Wal-Mart is out, you should be able to find some in a hardware or home improvement store.

If the box didn't have the right cubic air space for that sub then I'm sure you cooked the sub. You may have blew the sub if it sounds crackly.

sounds like you could have a mix of isuses...

blown sub (yep, even new out of the box, or due to wrong size box)
box problem (wrong size, type, not good construction)
wiring problem (wires reversed on sub - out of phase)
no crossover installed (playing higher frequencies than supposed to - will sound like crap)

First, i'd check your wiring, then box, then exchange the sub. if it still sounds like crap, it'z because you don't have a crossover.
