I think it is a personal choice and can sometimes reflect the cultural situation of the person in question.I live in a large city in the UK and I know that some Muslim women choose to wear the hijab, and some do not.
I've noticed this difference with friends in a similar way to the way some Jewish women will choose to cover their head while others don't. Perhaps some choose not to because in a city like this one there is a wider culture of diversity in which people feel able to make a personal choce based purely on their own reason rather than there be a cultural factor convincing them that they should. I don't think there is one easy answer because it's a very personal thing to the women in question.
If I went to visit Iran, I would wear one myself.although I am not a Muslim woman. When in Rome you do as the Romans do and respect the values and customs of the country that you are visiting.

Not all muslim girls actually wear one but I think that the main purpose behind it is modesty.
I know it's a matter of choice but what I don't understand is why men aren't encouraged to something like it - little bit sexist isn't it?

It is for modesty. Females must guard her modesty, because Allah willed the wearing of hijab for women.
Many Westerners (and sometimes even Middle Easterners) say, that the hijab is oppressive. To the contrary the wearing of the hijab comes empowerment - a woman is not judged by her physical appearance but rather for her intellect, her kindness, her character, her actions and her words.
In wearing the hijab, she is not viewed upon as a sexual object, but rather a respected individual in her society.
Allah knows best. Ameen.

I think it's to do with self respect and symbolism.
Most women who wear hijabs or burqas choose to because they don't want to conform to immodesty and intend to attract the opposite sex.
Others do so because it's a symbol of their faith like a cross is for Christians, people see them and know she is a followers of Islam who adheres to certain rules.

Because in the generally somewhat erotophobic Islamic culture a special significance is assigned to hair. It mostly makes me wonder about Islamic men having this "hair-trigger" as on a daily basis I see many Islamic women that wouldn't have any effect on me even if the short and curly's were visible.

Because Allah (being a bloke) conveniently tells them to so as to ensure women are kept under the boot of the men.
Sorry, but you are all kidding yourselves, no non-muslim would wake up and think 'oh I will wear a veil to be modest'. Its just the outside trappings that point to a religion that likes to single out women as being all the same (baby making husband pleasing machines) and secondary to men.

Yes, my friend wears one. I think it's because they don't believe they should show every part of their head to strangers in the street and risk men oggling them. They believe ony the husband should see them without the hijab. I hope I'm right on this!

I know why I wear hijab( which does not just mean head covering), I wear hijab because I have faith in Allah(swt), I have respect for myself and my husband, I am proud to be a Muslim and I dress as a Muslim woman should...A Mulsim woman should never dress like she is a man... and a man should never dress like a woman..

What's a hijab? Birka, I know. Hijab? What's that?
(Hey, Einsteins, how about a passing out a little compassionate enlightenment along with your thumbs down and arrogant "I know, do you?" What you know doesn't matter, if you refuse to share it. That's the point of YAnswers.)
