Cancer of the blood or Leukaemia, is where there are too many white blood cells in the body. White blood cells do NOT carry oxygen and therefore the body is slowly starved of oxygen and things begin to deteriorate.
Blood cells are manufactured in the Bone Marrow and this is where a possible cure is found. Bone marrow is a jelly like substance that is found in the cavity of the bones.
symptoms of leukaemia are:
1) Tiredness and apathy
2) Loss of appetite
3) Pale complexion
4) Nose Bleeds
5) Inabillity to fight infections.
There are other symptoms, but they are too numerous to mention here. Leukaemia is tested for by taking a sample of blood. It is then looked at under a microscope and an assesment is made. This is called a "White Count". The number of white cells is counted and if it is found to be too high, then further tests are made before a diagnosis of leukaemia is made.

The doctor can send off a blood sample which shows any changes that might cause alarm. I had a test done many years ago and it came back that there was something wrong with my plateletts, I was rushed in for a bone marrow test but when they did a second blood test everything was normal. No-one knows what happened between the two tests, one suggestion was that the samples got mixed up which means someone out there could be walking around very ill!
See your doc if you are worried.
Good luck!

Blood cancer is known as Leukemia. Leukemias can be classified as acute versus chronic and myelogenous versus lymphocytic.
ALL is the most common pediatric cancer; it also strikes adults of all ages. Malignant transformation and uncontrolled proliferation of an abnormally differentiated, long-lived hematopoietic progenitor cell results in a high circulating number of blasts, replacement of normal marrow by malignant cells, and the potential for leukemic infiltration of the CNS and abdominal organs. Symptoms include fatigue, pallor, infection, and easy bruising and bleeding. Examination of peripheral blood smear and bone marrow is usually diagnostic. Treatment typically includes combination chemotherapy to achieve remission, intrathecal chemotherapy for CNS prophylaxis and/or cerebral irradiation for intracerebral leukemic infiltration, consolidation chemotherapy with or without stem cell transplantation, and maintenance chemotherapy for 1 to 3 yr to avoid relapse.

Commonest symptom is non-specific tiredness. Sometimes patients present with gland enlargement, or liver or splenic pain. Some types may present with anaemia or recurrent infections.
Most are diagnosed when patients with these non specific complaints have their blood counts measured during diagnostic work up. Many patients have early disease diagnosed when they are having routine bloods done for other reasons.
