I am going to make my first (new) car purchase soon, and I am very excited. I know there's a destination fee that is unavoidable with a new car but will I get charged more if I ask a dealer to bring in a particular color I want? The color of the car isn't going to make or break the fact that I am going to get a new one, I just want to know if it's worth it since it's a big purchase... Shouldn't I get exactly what I want??

I've been told that when you make a special request for a vehicle, if they bring it to you, you have to buy it... Is that true also?

I talked with the dealership yesterday (I am going in tomorrow afternoon) and they basically want me to come in and sign papers committing to a car that they don't have yet. I told the sales guy what I wanted in a car and he said that they can get exactly what I want but that they usually have the buyer sign for the car first.
If the car comes exactly, as I want it, that's great, but something doesn't sit right with me to sign for a car that I haven't driven and seen yet. What do you think????!

Here's the real world from someone who's worked at several dealerships. With some vehicles there are literally thousands of bodystyle, color, engine, option combinations for a single model and a dealer can't possibly stock them all. The destination charge you see on the sticker is the amount charged to the dealer to get the vehicle from the factory.
Most dealers have a locator program that can match your wants to vehicles anywhere in the country. However, this is not a free service. Here's how it works. The dealer calls the dealership that has the car you want. He offers to trade one of his cars for one of theirs. If both agree, the cars are driven or put on a flatbed truck to be exchanged. If you're in a metro area and there are several of the same brand dealerships, it will probably cost the dealer under $100 to do this and your really not going to see any real price difference. If the car is a substantial distance away and you want it, it will probably cost you at least a dollar a mile for the transport. Personally, if I were going to buy a car and keep it several years, I'd be willing to pay a few hundred dollars to get what I want. I have personally sold vehicles where we pulled them over 500 miles away at a charge of $700. However, the car cost $45k and the gentleman was going to write the vehicle off as a business expense. Good luck.

Indeed, you should get the color of the car you actually want. You should know (I work in the auto industry), dealers have a relationship with each other. So, when you go to a particular deal you may like, and they do not have the color or features on a particular model you desire, they have the ability to look at the inventory of other dealership and can arrange a swap with them to get you the model, color and features you desire. This is a NOT CHARGE oppportunity and they should be happy to provide this service for you.
They can't find one exactly the way you want it - again, they can order it from the factory (obviously takes a little longer) and have one built exactly to your specifications.
While it has been said in other answers to your question, the color should not matter with the cost, please note some colors DO actually cost more. For example, bright reds and and perhaps other colors are actually quite hard to reliably get on a car (the pigments cost more) and thus, you may pay a little extra for some colors. But this is rare, and certainly not in most cases.

Oh yes, it is totally worth it! You don't want to end up settling for a color you're going to end up hating and regretting a few months later (especially if you're planning on keeping the car for a few years).
Unless you're asking for a 'special' color that normally costs extra anyway, there should be no extra costs, as others have mentioned, dealers can get cars from other dealers or even the factory.
If the dealer says no or tries to charge you extra (for a regular color), then it's time to find a new dealer!
I'd just hate to see you get a color then end up hating it and then having to live with it for years to come - with how expensive new cars are, get exactly what you want! Happy car shopping! :)

The color chart that is offered at the dealer ship, are the only choices you have, for no strings order. If it's not on the chart, then, the price goes up,the delivery time is longer, and you will put a large down payment. If you do this be certain to ask for a extra quart for touch ups, since the paint will be hard to match, later on

Either you didn't understand your options or your dealer is not trustworthy. I would go to another dealer altogether. Remember after the purchase, you will have a relationship with these people for another 1 to 5 years (depending on the warranty period).
Go to another dealer.

Yea, get what you want!
they shouldn't charge you more than what "A" car costs, even if it's a different color.
