The cause(s) of lower back pain are varied and can never be answered without the help of an x-ray/MRI/CAT scan to come up with an explanation. There is everything from sciatica to a herniated disc, to a tumor, to spinal stenosis. That's a question that only your doctor can answer. But if it helps answer your question, I personally have a herniated disc with spinal stenosis with fusion in my SI (Sacroilliac [Joint]) joint and compression of L3-L4-L5-S1-S2 and the pain is controlled by a long term regimine of Percocet/Oxycodone.

As a person who suffers periodically from a similar problem my best guess would be that you have a lower vertebrae which is out of place. In my case this was a slipped disc which had slightly spun to the left and was pinching a nerve in my back. This was accompanied by an almost constantly contracted muscle in my back that developed to keep the nerve from being pinched. If you have these same symptoms I would suggest going to a chiropractor who can quickly put the disc back in place, but be sure to follow up this reallignment with excercises (the chiropractor can supply the information on) to strengthen the muscles in your back and keep the disc in its place.

Old age.:( Really though you might have a slipped disk, nerve damage... or just a bad bed, stress... could be anything. Go to an orthopedic Dr. or a chiropractor. Good luck!
