Elijah first appears in Scripture quite suddenly, soon after the start of King Ahab's reign in the northern kingdom of Israel, along with his wicked wife, Queen Jezebel, in 1 Kings, chapter 17. The "calling of Elijah" account that you're referring to is not in the Bible, and may be a Rabbinic story surmising what his calling might have been like.
