I'm American, but have lived in Europe for almost 20 years. Tipping in my EU country is generally one euro per person served at the table.

I am APPALLED by American tipping practice! 15% Who came up with that figure? I am further FLABBERGASTED when an American waiter receives my tip, and then requests an explanation! Who trains those waiters? Why tip someone who has driven me nuts through my entire meal asking me ridiculous questions or trying to sell me more food than I want to eat...despite clear requests to be left alone to enjoy my meal and the company of my dining companions. Makes me want to stay home for dinner!!!

Waiters should be paid better--by their employers, not by the diners.

Europeans are cheap assholes- waiters work extremely hard and the worse hours - all holidays and every weekend--what a crap job-- they have to clean up the mess people leave on the tables- especially the ones with kids, and they get paid MINIMUM WAGE if that....how do you expect them to live? It's not like they can get a day job too- they usually have to report to the restaurants around 4 to start setting up the tables-- there's a lot of background work that is not tip related and if you think they are making too much money- get a job for one day as a waiter in any restaurant and you will thank god you have your day job.............tip and give at least 20 percent of the total bill.........and that barely puts food on their tables!

Only if restaurant owners up their pay. In europe they are paid minimum wages and more.
In France (just as an example), the minimal wage for the fast foods (in normal restaurants that is higher) is of 1450 Euros a month (almost 2000 US dollars), topping off at 2745 EU for the fast-food manager (again, that is 3300 US a month approx.).
The tips in the US are just rounding off wages that are not being paid to the employee otherwise. Of course, that would have to be reflected on the menus prices, in the same way than the tips have an incidence today on your final bill... so in the end, you will pay the same amount.

Well I don't know what you mean about " work for their money" I have been , a fast food worker, a cafe worker, a waitress, a cocktailwaitress, a bartender, a manager of a cafe, a manager of a restaurant, a manager of a bar, except for being a nurses aid in a nursing home( which you do not get paid in tips, or get paid for what you do) Waiting on the public is one of the hardest things one person can ever do, and you want to take the tips they EARN, away from them. By the way in case you do not know, waiters and waitresses don't get min. wage and have to claim tips they didn't even make on taxes. Guess you know my answer by now.

Europe has the right idea about universal health care, and actually taxing the hell out of gasoline in order to provide for public transportation (like $5 a gallon or more)
They probably have the right idea about paying servicepeople a living wage, and mandating vacation time, maternity leave and the lack of tipping... because they work to live. Rather than the other way around.

From the Netherlands here, waiting staff gets regular pay, of at least but often more than minimum wage AND when you are happy with the service, it's very normal to tip too.

As in other countries in Europe I've visited.

I don't know why a lot of American people seem to think that tipping is out of the ordinairy here.

No that would be mean. That is the way they earn their living. They are not waiting tables because they think it is the right thing to do. It is the way they make a living. I wouldn't want anyone coming in and changing my pay rate on my job. May God Bless U.

It's funny because I still tip in Europe like I'm in the U.S.

I think most of the wait staff gets confused as to why I left some of my money on the table.

But to answer your question, yeah, lets get rid of it.

currently waiters in the US make below minimum wage. they live on tips. also, the 20% rule in the US is bullshit. i pay the wait staff what theyve earned. crappy service=no tip. good service=generous tip. and i dont go back to places with bad service.

Ignorance is bliss. In some states, waiters and waitresses make less than mininum wage because of tips.

Quit being a cheapskate.
