Cathedrals are really beautiful. Well, european ones. Granted, there are other "pretty buildings" but ones built for a religious reason take on certain qualitites.

The modern period has witnessed a drastic change in the very meaning of society. Today, it has become almost a misdemeanor. In the present context it does not mean people of some religious faith living together. In the medieval periods, it was common interest that brought people to live together in one place, like a herd of deer, normally, on a fertile and safe land. We can call today, their way of life as a religion, unnamed and unregistered. Here an interesting question can be answered correctly. That is, whether Religion or God came first. It has to be religion first then God. Because we do not know whether that so called group of people had any God at all, at least, in the early stage of their association that was natural like a herd of deer. Slowly these groups in different pockets started worshiping the Gods. How and whom to worship, differed with the groups and much later, within the group. Here developed the scriptures and later the holy books. So religion was a prelude to scriptures and holy books and of course, the Gods.

So in essence, something good that religion alone might have brought to the society is some of these or all of these or none of these. If none of these, then you are an atheist, if all of these, then you are a Cosmo politic or if some of these then, well, you are really religious!

Thad, what religion??

If you mean Christianity, the list is endless.

In Roman society, brutality against women and children was to a degree unimaginable. Think on the level of Darfur!

Christianity, that is the teachings of Christ and the Bible, elevated women to a level of equality with men. (see Galatians 3:28)

Most world religions have taught that free men and slaves or serfs are of different classes and honor before God. But, the Bible teaches that God is no respecter of persons (Eph 6:8)

Christianity established societal virtues which were not known among Romans; ( the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. - Galatians 5:22-23)

The first known Hospitals and Hospices in the Roman world were created by Christians. Before that, only soldiers and rulers were given that kind of mercy.

The written languages of many people was created by Christians (as in Cyrillic, created by Bishop Cyril).

There are hundreds....

Basically, the world before Christianity was a very heartless place. There were 60 Million slaves in Rome. It took a while, but Christianity ended that.

imagine that there was no organized religion..so you're just a man but you are sure that there is something bigger out there..something BIG and you cannot explain this. have you not felt this? Religion/ Faith explains this feeling inside you. That you are part of something bigger..Whatever your religion is! But yes, practically, religions has brought many good things to society, like charity, hope and love to mankind..but i believe this is what you meant with your question.

It's funny how many people start rattling off the names of religious charities - not stopping to think that CHARITY WAS NOT A BYPRODUCT OF RELIGION AND SO IT WILL CONTINUE TO EXIST LONG AFTER RELIGION IS GONE.

I cannot think of one good thing that would not exist anyway...

The american flag
The reason is the red stands for Jesus Christ blood and the white stands for cleansing for the sins of people; the blue probably stands for loyalty (don't hold me accountable for the blue portion) but the rest I am very sure on.
Also our founding fathers were christains and they based the laws on christian beliefs.

Lots of people will claim that religion makes them happier, and that's why it's better than not being religious.

This is like saying a drunk man is happier than a sober one.

The power to have something stable to believe in. Being saved and reborn saves people's lives, gives them the oppertuinity to start over and be a different, clean person. If there wasn't God, there would be nothing.
