My coworker and friend was recently promoted to a supervisor position. And she doesn't feel like it was a good move.

Conditions vary from company to company of course. But in general, there is much more responsibility. A good manager should take credit for any problems in the group, and is responsible for fixing them. And at my company, the FDA could drop by anytime and question us about our laboratory practices. We chemists can just say "I don't know, ask my supervisor." But the supervisors have to come up with an answer, and if the answer is not what the FDA wants to hear, then there could be big trouble for the whole company.

Also, managers have to not only manage their subordinates, but they have to make their own bosses happy, as well as coordinating with other departments.

When you are a manager or supervisor you must make many decisions that can affect the company in many ways. You need the experience of being a subordinate to learn much of this unless you have a degree. Because of this hugh responsibility that is why it is a harder position.

Yes I do! As a manager my biggest problems were in middle management. It always turned out to be a no win situation, where you are both a subordinate to upper management and a supervisor. I was used alot by upper mgt. so they weren't the "bad guys". When I moved into upper mgt., not alot changed since I did not want to follow that philosophy. The hours and the stress were unbelievable. In management, it is impossible to make everyone content, especially when the bottom line is financial driven not people driven.

ABSOLUTELY! The first big thing is the level of responsibility. There will be far more to take care of. There is a lot more to the operation of your workplace than meets your 'drone' eye. As a Mgr you will be taken to task for the mistakes, etc of your subordinates. Hopefully, you will not be in charge of the people you were just working with because sometimes they can get resentful.
BUT...if you can get a supervisory position, take it. There is nothing better for character development and overcoming challenges. You will learn and grow more than you can imagine! Best of Luck!

What did you expect? You know the grass always seems greener on the other side. For someone who is not used to delegating responsibility, criticizing subordinates or having to make all the decisions, it can be a rude awakening how difficult and unpleasant it may be. But get used to it, you're gonna have to get used to it sooner or later. Otherwise you'll just stay a subordiante.

I was a secretary for many years, not responsible for mistakes. The boss is responsible for his correspondence. I was blamed for some things. Now I am trying to start a business. I work all the time wanting things done and being alone. Without a Bachelor's degree I am not taken seriously. I can't get cooperation. It looks better on the Resume than just typing someone's memo.

It's harder, cause you are responsible for work of other people. Now I'm managing a project and I'm responsible for work of other departments. My friend is supervising her department, she has to correct faults of others, teach them, and still sometimes they act as if she was mistreating them. On my previous position I was going home and forgetting about it completely. Now I think about my projects even in a shower.
Still, it's more interesting and more challenging.

Yes, that's why they are paid more. They have more responsibilities.
