baichi which means retarded is more serious than 笨 (ben). But if u use it in a joking manner with friends, i don't think it's offensive.

In Spore, we used to address pple as auntie, uncle even fish market pple address others auntie, uncle when they themselve are older than them.... But we've recently changed this concept... It's rude to address pple auntie, uncle at places like these... Auntie and Uncle is only reserved for friend's parent, and as for our own... we usually addresss them according to our dialect group's pronouciation which differentiate mother/father side of relatives... Autie Uncle is still widely used bcoz we're in a multi-language society where English is our working language. But we still use the Malay/Tamil form if we knows how to use it correctly. For example we never address pple AhYee阿姨, AhShu阿叔bcoz it's not appropriate. Instead we address them as DaShen大婶, DaBo大伯 or DaShu大叔 and whatever is more appropriate

In Chinese Language, there are many ways to describe the word stupid. You can use 笨蛋(Ben Dan)-for scolding someone, 傻瓜(Sha Gua)-telling a person.
在中文裏面有很多方式可以表達本但這個字。你可以用笨蛋來駡一個人,可以用傻瓜來講一個人。

We usually use 笨蛋 when talking to friends or even the elders. 白痴 actually is more offensive, you should use it carefully. 傻瓜 is sometimes used between lovers as a term of endearment.

笨蛋(bèn dàn) or 白痴(bái chī)
It depends on who you talk to, if you use it when talk to your closed friends,it should not be any problem.
We always use it when joking and no one think that's offensive.
