Mark and Luke are not found in the biblical list of 12 disciples.
The earliest Gospel is that of Mark’s which was written about 60-75 AD. Mark was the son of Barnabas’s sister. Matthew was a tax collector, a minor official who did not travel around with Jesus. Luke’s Gospel was written much later, and in fact, drawn from the same sources as Mark’s and Matthew’s. Luke was Paul’s physician, and like Paul, never met Jesus. By the way, did you know that the names Marks and Luke were not included in the 12 appointed disciples of Jesus as mentioned in Matthew 10:2-4?

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; the first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Great question! Truth is, we don't know who wrote what in the bible. Remember, the bible has been translated so many times by so many different people with so many political of spiritual points of view that the true authors are long forgotten. Sad, that.

However, I do find it interesting that people feel threatened by this fact. Notice how many thumbs down I got in just 30 seconds. Sad that, too.

I'm not a big believer or studied the Bible to the extent of most i suppose however, I don't suppose any one has really gone to find out the real names for the apostles or the disciples have they? some may want to go read the old testament and see how many James, Johns, Andrews, Thomas's you come across. Or that some of the names are derived from different cultures and mean the same. But then I'm an atheist so I'm bound to say something contentious.

Before all the thumbs down come along, can I just point out that they all may be true accounts of real actions, although I don't really think the names allocated now are correct.

The writers of the New Testament can be considered Jesus' apostles, followers and/or disciples. One does not need be to his companion during Jesus' activities to be considered his disciples, followers or apostles. The twelve disciples mentioned were just the first twelve among his group to be with him. Some parts of Mark 16:1-20 was not even found in early manuscript.
The four apostles who wrote Jesus' life had it written long after Jesus was said to have ascended or declared dead. their writings must have taken a long time before it could be found as the writers were still gathering from words of mouth most of the accounts about him. Some could even be from hearsays where you can find the four who wrote it do not agree in several accounts. Of course the Catholic are fast in their retort by saying each account was written in a different time, different place and different audience. Such a shallow defense but they stuck with it for centuries.

You may have noticed that Luke was a doctor who traveled around with Paul, according to the book of Acts, and several of Paul's letters.

Church tradition holds that Mark was written by "John-Mark" mentioned in the New Testament. He appears to be a close friend of Peter, and tradition holds that he complied his gospel from the sermons & stories of Peter.

--------------edit-------

Luke was a greek, wrting for another greek man named Theophilus (Luke 1:4; Acts 1:1).

Mark was a Jew, as he was a cousin of Barnabas (Colossians 4:10; Philemon 1:24; 1 Peter 5:13)

We have no way of knowing who wrote any of the Gospels. The authorship is based more on tradition than anything else. For example, the Gospel of John was probably written much to late to have been written by John the disciple.

They were deciples, not apostles. Luke I know was a historian who followed the apostle Paul and wrote one of the four Gospels plus the book of acts. Mark I think was also an historian who followed the apostles.

I think i understand the question. As i understand it Luke was a historian about 50 to 100 years after the death of christ. He was meant to be pretty good and purely historical. Mark i am not sure about but i am sure you could find it on the net.

First of all, ALL the disciples were Jews, as was Jesus. Secondly, Matthew the "publican," was a disciple of Jesus, publican being the King James word for tax-collector. I'm not sure what your question or point is?

Mark is a surname for John. Acts 12:12,25
Mark wrote Mark. Luke wrote Luke. Many people who knew and met Jesus and not every single one He met and healed got their name recorded in the Bible, though there were far more who knew Him and loved Him who's names were not mentioned, and I'm sure many more who followed Him and whom He healed.also.

Jesus renamed Paul "Saul", Paul knew Jesus.

Not every writer of every book of the Bible were one of the 12 disciples, and not every writer's name is known, but God is the still the Author, Jesus said, "If My words abide in you, and you abide in My words, you are truly My disciple"
