Not just nuclear warhead and missile technology as some would have you believe. Chemical warfare and biological warfare were also being developed by both sides to try to out do the other. Also weapon defence systems - 'Starwars' type technology with the idea of shooting down missiles, chemical and biological defense programs. The space race can be seen as part of this as much of the reason for it's importance was the possibility of missile defence systems and the old strategic knowledge that the person who holds the high ground is in a better position.

On a related note the US is currently engaged in trying to build a nuclear defence system - just as it did back then, this now this threatens to overthrow the balance of power and deterrence. Many American's don't understand this but consider this - if, say for argument's sake, China was attempting to build a missile shield that would stop American attacks against them but allow China to still attack America, don't you think that America would protest and be driven to attack before such a shield could be built? Particularly if America couldn't afford to build a shield of it's own due to labor costs (approximates the rest of the world's position due to lack of resources).

A stabilizing ingredient is any subject which permits the placement to stay consistent and not increase right into a combating conflict as a consequence.

first of all, this is elementary history; read; it helps

after WW2, the Soviets and the West went into a frenzy trying to defend their vast borders. in order to keep a status quo up, they started trying to build offensive systems that would beat those defenses, and kept building newer defenses to beat the newer offense. it was a much more complex cycle than that, but I'm not sure you can understand much more if you're asking such questions lol.
