Our church has the programmable thermostats for the chapel, gym, and some of the larger sections. The bishop's office has its own unit so he can work without wasting energy on other rooms.
Another thing we do, is we have two congregations using the same building. We meet at different times. Each congregation has its own church leaders independent of each other. This way, the building is not sitting idle so much.

I personally recycle just about everything that comes through my front door. I've got a bin for plastics, glass, aluminum, and organic material, but unfortunately I don't think my church recycles. The recycling aluminum cans idea offered by Barry D seems like a wonderful way for my church to begin taking better care of the earth and consequently others. I think the church should at least try recycling SOMETHING. Especially if it can create additional benefits like helping single parent families. I go to a shavuot celebration at my church tomorrow... maybe I can mention this! :o)

I work with five churches, so they range on the scale. We try to conserve energy, and we recycle. But we could do more, that's for sure. Old drafty buildings. Too much paper use.
On the pluse side, our diocese signed on to an Interfaith Effort called The Earthkeeper's Covenant.
So, we probably get somewhere between a C+ and a B.

My church started recycling aluminum cans a few years ago to earn money for the Single Parent Family Ministry. I think it's a good idea, but we could probably do more. Most churches try to spend their time saving souls instead of saving trees, which is the whole point, isn't it?

Recycling yes, and a few minutes after the service ends they start shutting the lights off, even if there is still people in the sactuary. It does cost about 12000-15000 a month on electricity/gas so I don't blame them.

The Bible says the earth will wear out like old clothing, that is what is happening, and there is nothing we can do about it.
