I was given a prescription for Amoxicillin 3 times a day for 10 days. They told me that it WILL interfer with my birth control and to use a back up method...How long does it take for the antibiotic to be out of my system completely? The doctor said I should wait at least a month, and the pharmacist said 1 week...If I start it today, May 22nd would it be completely out of my system by July 22nd? Thanks for all your help!

Thank you so much for your help! I wont be having any type of contact until July (if even then) so I'm not worried about now. I'm just overly cautious of medication and really dont like taking anything, but apparently I'm pretty sick and dont want it to turn into pneumonia or anything so I have to take it, but I just wanted to make sure by the end of July I would be good to go. Thank you sooooooo much! You just relieved a lot of stress!

Honestly with medication questions, the pharmacist is always the more reliable source. A lot of doctors really have no idea when it comes to drugs, which is really scary. To answer your question, yes it amoxicillin will interfere with your birth control and you should use a backup method for the entire time you're on the antibiotics and for 1 to 2 weeks afterward. I'd probably go with 2 weeks just to be safe. By July 22nd you'll be more than good to go.

Use back-up for one week after finishing your amoxicillin. Chances are that it won't cause your birth control to not work, but there is a small chance that it might.
Doctors notoriously know little about pharmacology.

Three weeks generally. The safer the better. Don't take the chance if you don't like the consequences.
