I am going to be studying for ten weeks in Beijing. How much clothing and of what types are appropriate to pack? (I will have access to some laundry facilities and am worried about overpacking) Is one large luggage piece advisable, or are two smaller ones better?

You have no choice in the matter. You are only allowed one carry on and two peices of luggage - 23 kgs (about 50 pounds each). So that's about 125 lbs all together - that's it.

Plan accordingly. Addtionally, you might want to consider going real, real light - clothing is SO cheap in China, you should consider part of your 10 week study as a shopping trip (unless you are a hard to fit size).

One large one is way better, especially since you're studying alone. I went to england for an entire summer by myself and was very glad that I only brought one suitcase because I had to move around London via the subway and then take trains and it was impossible to have time to get more than one suitcase off the train before the doors closed. When you travel, the less luggage the better.

Check the max size and weight accetable for airline u r using.
If all ur stuff can be packed in one ,take just one and a 7 kgs of Cabin Baggage.
It will save u a lot of trouble at both ends

Best to check with the Airlines you'll be flying, but the norm is -

2 pieces for a total of 140lbs. Each piece should not exceed 70lbs.

For example - you cannot have one suitcase weighing 90lbs and the second suitcase weighing 50lbs.

Each suitcase cannot exceed 70lbs.

I would bring just regular clothes and one large luggage bag and a smaller one.

2 smaller ones would probably be easier to carry

TWO SMALLER WILL BE EASIER TO CARRY, BUT YOU CAN TRY ONE BIG AND ONE SMALL IF THE AIRLINE ALLOWS YOU. REMEMBER, YOU MAY WANT TO BRING BACK GIFTS, SO THAT WILL ADD TO THE WEIGHT.
