Because there are a lot of terrified people living a shell of an existence, unable to appreciate the fine line between indulgence and ingenuity. It's really a shame, and those of us who can appreciate the good qualities of guns should not be afraid to defend our rights.

A lot of people believe if there are not guns there will be no violence, but like you said "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will own guns." Then the anti gun people will be crying for their guns back. Unfortunately there has always been violence and always will be. Look at all the weapons that were used before guns were even invented. Look how many people are killed without any guns involved. Violence will always be around. In some cases I do agree that guns make violence a little easier, but at the same time if someone decides to harm another person and their isn't a gun around they'll just grab a knife or something right?

The communists would love for everyone to be anti-gun. Their obj. is to inslave the public, not treat it with power. That's why you see it CONSTANTLY being brought up. If you can't fight back, how r u gonna stop them (the gov't) from just doing whatever it pleases. For the most part, the media has done a great job of making gun ownership a bad idea. In Los Angelas and DC, guns are banned, has anyone seen the crime rate there? The basic principle is, the criminals are gonna have guns no matter what, as long as they exist. If you ban them from the normal citizens, then how do they protect themselves? That's exactly what's happened in those cities. Personally, I think everyone should walk around with a gun on their hip.
Sorry to get into politics...
OK... had to edit this... for the people who say that if no guns existed, it would be a more peaceful world. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH
Apparently you're ignorant to think that a gun is the only form of weapon out there. If guns didnt exist, people would be killing with swords, knives, baseballs bats, cars, explosives, THEIR FISTS!! come on now.... gain some common sense.
If you look at the stats, yes guns do kill a lot of people a year. BUT, how many of those deaths were in SELF DEFFENCE by rightful gun owners.

I have nothing against legally owning guns. I've been to the pistol range myself, just for kicks. That said, I don't own one, because I'd probably end up shooting someone. Most murders in the U.S. are committed by people the victims knew- family, spouses, "friends"- not strangers. That said the Second Amendment talks about a "well-regulated militia" which by definition means the purchase, ownership, and use of guns will be REGULATED (legislation, control of some kind). I find it absolutely loony that one needs a driver's license to own and operate a car in this country, but doesn't need a license to own and operate a gun. Somebody should be shot! (lol). Hey, and if the Right-wing Rednecks (also sarcasm) ever get too far out of hand, it may be necessary to own a gun and start a revolution. Edit: Oh and I forgot. I think that why so many people are anti-gun, is because of they're purpose. I am one of the most pro-gun people you'll ever meet, but I'll admit that guns were originally made for the sole purpose to kill other people and that remains they're main purpose today. True, that guns kill far less people each year than other things. But cars or swimming pools were not designed for the purpose to kill. I think this is the anti-gunners view on firearms. While I know that the facts say otherwise, and that gun-control does not prevent crime, and personally am very opposed to most forms of gun control, I can at least understand where anti-gun people are coming from.
To Jimi L-
Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending gun control or anything. And I'm certainly not saying that guns kill more people than paper. All I'm saying is that guns were made for the purpose to kill. Now guns have evolved for use in sports and leisure But you can't deny that guns were originally designed to kill. Please don't misconstrue what I'm trying to say. All I'm saying is that guns were created out of warfare with the purpose to kill, and that is what some people have a problem with.

I'll break it down like this how many of you have come across some KKK member and been disgusted because that KKK member hates out of ignorance and some perceived reason that a lot of times they can't even explain??? Depending on where you live probably a lot. Now if you don't like guns, dogs, whatever you are no better than a KKK member to me. You believe what your told, or based on something you saw in a movie or TV or some other ignorant person said, you dislike something. But also from what I've read I don't know the technical term for it but a LOT of people are deathly afraid of guns just like people that hate spiders, or snakes they just can't help it. It's just ignorance or something mentally incapacitating. But for those that hate guns or the KKK member that hates whatever/whoever as an American you have the right to your opinion, your beliefs and I have the right to my opinions, beliefs, AND TO BARE ARMS!!! I'm Sorry you feel the way you do, but I respect you for your opinion (if based on facts not ignorance). If you don't like the land of the FREE, then move!!

Guns will never be outlawed. But, you are right, if they are outlaws will definitely have guns. And I will find a way to keep mine to protect myself. And I know that gun dealers can't discriminate against some buyers, but I wish they would. When I go to the shooting range and I see people with guns or looking at guns and they are dressed like gangsters, it makes me very angry. And being held up twice due to people trying to rob me, I feel as though I have a right to think this way. By the way, both of them went to jail.

It's because you only hear about the few people who abuse guns, and use them as leverage against others. The vast majority of gun owners are responsible, careful people who would only use them as defense if needed. Unfortunately, it is always the few, who ruin things for the many. People can be killed with baseball bats, too, Should we outlaw them, also?
It is always the outlawing of things that a proportionally few people abuse, that is the easy fix that has become the standard in America, instead of delving a little deeper and fixing the real problems, Unemployment. poor education, and the recent attitudes of everyone for themselves. We are not a healthy race, by any means, and the social structures we have adopted in the last century can only make us worse before we get better.

well much has been explained about you Americans, why a lot don't like guns, but i figure there's a lot more of u which value your rights.
Here in the Philippines, owning a gun isn't a right, it is a privilege as they say. Only the rich or shall we say powerful' can really afford the privilege. But hell, there are a lot of guns 'floating' around here, more than u can imagine for such strict' laws. As you can see and hear in the news, we have more gun crimes than you...
Points to ponder on, in your country, the barrel is considered the gun, in the Philippines, the receiver is the gun, where the serial number is...
But hell, it's differences like these that make each one interesting as they say, and i love my country.
Don't take your rights for granted...

I have been shooting since November 1990, and I have been very active in defending gun ownership. Aside from the obvious fact that guns can be used for the wrong reasons (crime/suicide), they also have the baggage of being loud and requiring sufficient, isolated space to be utilized. I wish that there were as many gun ranges as there were golf courses or tennis courts! The majority of Americans support gun ownership, whether it be handguns, rifles, or shotguns. The problem is that developers, the media, and some politicians treat guns as pollution and the public lets them have their way. I would worry more about being able to find good range space more than anyhting else right now. Never take that space for granted-even if you own it.

The purpose of (most) guns is to kill people. This makes fuzzy-wuzzy soccer moms nervous because they live in a magical fantasy land where everyone is happy together and bad things never happen to good people.
If you think killing people is always wrong and having the capacity to do so is unncessary, then being antigun makes sense. All they're good for then is recreational shooting and that alone wouldn't justify many kinds of weapons being in private hands.
If you're REALISTIC, you know that 'stuff' happens and you need to be prepared, and that it is your RIGHT to be prepared. Recreational shooting is just a bonus.
EDIT: I agree with the poster that says if no guns existed, it would be a better world.
The same can be said of nuclear weapons, and lots of other things.
The thing is, they DO exist, and no amount of fuzzy wuzzy kumbahyah "let's make the world a better place" legislation is going to change that. Since guns DO exist and always will, you're a fool if you don't get one yourself, since there will always be people who don't like you who have them.
