Interesting. I don't think this kind of information would help atheist any. Christians already think that atheist sent themselves up as god. This would just confirm that this is what atheist do and see what happens. But then again if there were no worshipers and everybody set themselves up as god, Then everybody would be fighting that they are god.
Of course if you get a group of people to worship one thing they are easier to control. So it does make some sense.

Look up 'Religion in North Korea' it gives information of beliefs down through the centuries until now.
Many people there may claim to be atheist and others say that their leader King Jong is a god, or an idol for a matter of a better description, but in all reality do they all really believe that.

North Korea revolted after the assassination of Diem and changed to a Communist state, for one thing. So they weren't forced into a particular belief sect as you claim. Kim Jong Il is simply idolized because of the Communist structure saying he should be worshipped. As for the Atheism part, the majority of southeast Asia (including North & South Korea) is Buddhist/Taoist, but I'm positive there is at least one Atheist there. :)

Well officially yes. The main reason that guys like Stalin do that is to keep groups that may oppose them from forming. I do agree with you that Communism is too much like a religion to really be considered atheistic. The Christians focus on the atheist thing a lot more than the Communists do.

The government is explictedly, but we don't know about the people privately.
With most Communist nations only 5% of the people or less are ACTIVE atheist Communists. The rest are in the fields with oxen trying to scatch out a living.

N. Korea does not choose faith anymore because of the fact there is already some thing that keeps their inhabitants brainwashed (the government). that hardly counts as atheism as their dictator has been depicted as god to their human beings. besides, you're in basic terms comparing 2 specific worldwide places so enable's generalize this slightly: why are atheistic countries frequently extra wealthy and non violent than deeply religious ones?

I think they are atheists, but I don't know for sure.
That Kim Jong Il is a nutjob - they may worship him like a god.
Crazy people always seem to be able to get people to do all kinds of things.

I believe that most people in N.Korea practice Buddhism and Confucianism. There is a smaller population of Christians, and probably other religions as well.
