I continue to do my job because I understand that it needs to be done.
Being a police officer is:
1. Seeing so much blood and guts that you could eat your lunch while standing in it.
2. Being called a "pig" at work and "daddy" at home.
3. Getting complained on for speeding to a call and then getting complained on again for "taking too long".
4. Being hated and feared by the same people who you would lay your life down for.
5. Knowing that each day you could make a mistake that lands you in prison or kills you.
6. Leaving your family everyday knowing that you may never see them again.
7. Understanding that everyone lies, no matter how innocent they profess themselves to be.
8. Seeing things on a daily basis that most people won't ever see in their entire lives.
9. The indescribable pride that comes from wearing the badge and uniform.

Salary - The pay in New England is the highest in the country ... mostly because it's so expensive to live out here, though...If you have a Master's degree you're starting out at 70K. And state troopers make mega-money. Promotions - There's a long list, but if you're smart and patient, good things will happen. Life is good, except for the inevitable "cop questions" you get from every noncop at every gathering ..."Can you fix my ticket?" ...people tend to take their anger out on you, on duty or off (that's why you keep the job a secret for as long as possible...) Stress is up there, mostly because you don't know what's going to happen. Someone got stabbed in the chest a few weeks ago, by a 14 year old kid they were trying to get into the ambulance. You're always on guard, like driving in heavy, drunken, unpredictable traffic in a blizzard at night, for your whole shift. But I'd rather be a cop than anything else.

I am answering your question without reading the article. I always have, and always will make an attempt to help someone. If the response to my action is negative, all I can say is, Oh Well, I tried. Even a so-called Cop Hater will say thank you if you give them a play. I guarantee that a person who openly says he/she hates the Police, also hate a lot more people, but just haven't figured out how to say it. I live by positive thoughts, not negative.
To all the proud people who wear the uniform, and their families, all over the world,
I love ya guys!

I like this article and it really does describe to a great extent why I keep going to work, thank you for posting it.
When I leave my house for work I always try to be in a good mood and smile at my husband and son before I leave. I give them big hugs and kisses and promises to be careful.
I want to make sure that their last memory of me will be a good one if I don't make it back home. I don't dwell on this, it doesn't keep me up at night, but it is a fact of life in my job.
This is something all of the cop haters that post here will never understand.

Because there are people who are not "cop-haters" who want your help. Being a police officer is the best job in the world.
I remember hooking up guy who broke into his ex-wife's house, scared the hell out of the kids and was as high as a kite. I also found out that he sexually assaulted his ex-wife a week prior. When I arrested him, his two daughters hugged me and thanked me for helping their mother.
That's why I love being a cop.

As long as there is ignorance in the world, there will be crime. Guess that means we will never be out of a job!
If the cop haters were smart... they would wise up, quit doing ignorant things, and be nice to the police.

For whatever reason you do it, I thank you.
You all make the world a better place despite the ignorant fools both in here and on the street who would seek to hurt you and tear you down.
They wouldn't last one minute in your boots, and yet feel that they are somehow quaified to judge you.
Again, I thank you, for I know that in the world you receive little thanks but go on doing your job just the same.
You make sense out of a scary, violent world.
You make it a safer place for all of us, safe even for those who hate you.
God bless you all, and may He keep you all safe.

Because no one else has the courage to do it.
It doesn't take much to talk alot of smack on an internet forum where no one can see your face.
It takes alot more to strap on your vest, load your gun and go 10-8, not knowing if that's your last night or not.
I couldn't do this do be popular, and I have no expectation of popularity. Some guys go out with the goal of "Lets take somebody to jail tonight."
I like that, but I also like "Lets help somebody out tonight."

Because most people dont understand what kind of honor and strength of fortitude it takes to go out and deal with what everyone else fears.
