Now both the atheists and the Christians are equally guilty for attacking each other verbally. Would atheists and Christians be willing to stop attacking each other verbally if 1) Christians stop trying to convert people to their religion and telling people who don't convert that they will go to hell and 2) If atheists stop trying to get people to reject their faith and quit attacking Christians for believing in an invisible man in the sky with no evidence. Would Christians be willing to stop attacking Atheists if they followed their rules and would Atheists be willing to stop attacking Christians if they followed their rules?

No. It's not enough.

Christians and people of all religions needs to stop making policy and political decisions based on their religious beliefs.

People in general need to stop doing things that effect everyone, based on misguided beliefs that they will be raised from the dead and live forever in Heaven.

Christianity needs to stop standing in the way of scientific progress. Christianity needs to stop supporting unqualified political candidates based only upon their abortion stance. Christians need to start caring for the environment because Jesus isn't ever coming back to fix the mess we've allowed ourselves to get in.

Stop your illogical stance against birth control and sex education. How do you ever expect the abortion rate to go down when you keep kids in the dark about the realities of sex and preach the completely unnatural solution of abstinence? Especially when every study ever conducted shows that it doesn't work.

I could go on and on....

Your suggested approach seems fundamentally flawed to me. If in fact Jesus was the Son of God, then how can you believe in Him without obeying his commandment to take that knowledge to the world? If in fact there is no God, then how can you possibly feel right about letting people be superstitious.

It seems to me that the controversy must stay and continue if we are to have a free world. The key here is tolerance, not tyranny. Tolerance is not acceptance - indeed, it's the opposite of acceptance. I mean tolerance in the same sense of a body "tolerating" a disease. You don't have to like it and it may offend you, but that's not going to stop you from protecting that freedom of speech, belief, and expression.

Here is how to know if you are being tolerant or not:
1. Tolerance does not lie about or misrepresent other systems of belief. If in doubt, just stay silent and let those that believe a certain way speak for themselves.
2. Tolerance does not mock or scorn other people's beliefs.
3. Tolerance does not abuse (physically or verbally) people of another belief system.

If you are an atheists and you mock Christians, you are intolerant. If you are a Christian and you mock atheists you are intolerant.

However, if you are a Christian and you sincerely believe atheists are going to hell, so you respectfully tell them that and it offends them - well that's not intolerance by any stretch of the imagination. Atheists, get over it. The offense is your to deal with, not the Christian's.

Likewise, if you are an atheist and you respectfully explain why you don't believe in God to a Christian and they are offended, well, that's not intolerance either. Christians, get over it.

Please, let's learn to openly disagree with each other respectfully. The mocking and lies I see on this site simply do not bode well for a tolerant future.

Sorry, but as was stated before by one answerer... Christians have been "commanded" to go into all the world and tell them about Jesus. To stop doing that would deny our faith, and in a way, we would stop BEING Christians. So you are asking us to stop being Christians just so atheists will stop calling us names? I think NOT. Telling people who don't convert that they will go to hell is also a basic tenet of our faith. Again, you are asking us to stop being Christians.

Frankly, I think most Christians are pretty thick-skinned when it comes to name-calling. While we don't LIKE being called names, as the old adage goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me."

I do just LOVE your slant on the 2nd "condition" where you refer to our God as "an invisible man in the sky with no evidence." Why didn't you use the proper term, GOD? That might at least show some respect for us Christians.

And there's the rub.... respect. As the one answerer stated, they show respect when respect is shown to them. I don't mind when atheists disagree, argue, answer, etc. etc., as long as they show respect. When I, as a Christian, disagree, argue, answer, etc. with atheists, I show respect to them.

But... and it's a BIG BUT, here... there will always be those who show no respect ... on both/all sides of an argument.

I just hope... and even pray a little, if you atheists don't mind... that on this Y-Answers forum, we can look passed the disrepectfulness and those who wish to discuss, educate, and inform can do so... respectfully.... without the name-calling.

I think what mainly needs to happen is that EVERYBODY needs to quit lumping all people into categories such as: Christians & Atheists. People are people regardless of their beliefs. Personality plays a big role in how people respond and react to situations, whether they are Christians, Atheists, etc. Not all Christians act one way just as not all Atheists act one way. We need to quit making stereotypes and take individuals for what they are..individuals.

I am a christian. I will not be aggressive or anything but i will tell people that the lord is waiting with open arms if they want him. See - no pressure. Just another option for them. Do you think that is ok???

You actually think that what's going on here will stop with a few agreements? Nope. I won't stop defending my faith, and reserve the right to witness to anybody.

How am I attacking Christians? I just answer their question honestly. If I am respected, I give respect.
