I live in Phoenix AZ, USA, where the ground is in the city is flat driving. Sometimes the AM gets distortion and sometimes it is clear, but only on certain channels.

The dealer replaced the antenna but that didn't help. The dealer says other Prius owners haven't said anything about whether they have the same problem or not.

Any ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it?

There have been a few reports to poor radio reception caused by:
1. A defective unit (receiver)
2. Antenna
3. An internal interference (something, but most likely electrical in the vehicle that is causing the interference)
4. Loose connection

Another possible cause would be something like high wires or other radio waves causing the problem.

As for a solution, best thing you could do is take it back to the dealer and tell them what is going on and see if they can't give you a definite answer as to why you are experiencing this. OR take it to a reputable stereo shop and ask them what is causing the problem or how to fix the problem.

I personally would have the receiver popped out and messing with the antenna and connections just to see if it changes as I played with it.
