ALL anti virus products use your processor and ramm to PROTECT you. Think of it as the prce you pay. In fact Avast is one of the most common one used by people pushing the edge of the envelope. It may be that you already have an av product and avast is the second AV. Two AV's will fight against each other. Yahoo security is watered down norton. AOell is watered down MCafee. Neither is as good as its real namesake. You can disable any ap when youre at a known safe site if you want to have more power. It has a very low overhead. Another is Kapersky or AVG. I would investigate other things to speed up your computer like cleaning your startup, changing your computer from "best look" to "best performance".

Spybot Search and Destroy is probably the best free scanner/protector out there(imho). It has a module that runs in the background, and a priority setting for scans, letting you work/play/whatever without losing too much cpu power. Good luck!
