188 pounds, 5'4, I'm 21 years old, and I exercise 6 times a week- 40 minutes cardio and 20 minutes weights each time

I want to lose around 50 pounds

I am thinking of going for around 1200 calories a day. Is this good for me to lose weight? Please give me some tips and advice. Thank you!

1200 calories is just about right. If you eat any less, your body may decide that you are in starvation mode and will hang onto every ounce of fat it can. While on the 1200 calorie a day diet and you find that you have hit a plateau, eat a few more calories a day for about 5 to 7 days and then go back to the 1200 calorie diet. I would suggest adding 200 or 300 calories and then cutting back. Doing this can sometimes break a plateau. Good luck on your weight loss.

body gonna rebel at low calorie count, and the body will accept usually cut 20% in calorie output most times. Eat normally like you would cut out like things like ketchup on fries, or cut out soda and replace it with water. About 200 less calories each day is probadly most safe, but 1200 calories is way too low. Around normal intake and cut about 150 to 200 calories a day and excercise a hour each day and the weight will slowly come down. Fad diets, and stravation never work, small lifestyle changes work far better.

no, it isnt enough.
for people above 150lbs - body needs 70cal/hour just for basic functioning (like when you are in coma) so thats 1680cal/day.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
