Interchangeable parts allow mass production since any of the parts will fit with all of the other parts. The alternative is to require assembly by selection of parts that fit and/or hand filling or other fitting methods. Interchangeable parts also allow repair by having a stock of parts that slip in place instead of requiring a skilled worker changing them to fit.

Advantages of Interchangeable Parts to Non-Interchangeable:

For the manufacturer, it lessens the burden of logistics support for part inventories by having less different parts. The manufacturer can also make more identical parts during a given mass production factory run, which reduce the cost of the item and perhaps make the manufacturer more competitive in his market.

For the consumer, it reduces the cost of the item since most parts are mass produced, so if you make more parts from a given factory run, the parts are cheaper.

For the people who build or maintain the unit that receives or uses the parts, it requires less training re part installation and maintenance.

Interchangable..think of it this way...when you need a new part for you car you go buy one that will fit any other car like yours...they are made that way by making each part to a certain tolerance so they are the same...if not you would have to go to a shop and have one special made for that part and that would cost you plenty..
