its hard to understand why people do what they do, but I can tell you that I have always been a thin, trim, attractive woman. I had a baby a year and a half ago and since then have lost almost all of the weight, barring a few pounds. I have to tell you? I have never had to watch my weight so much as I do now... and you know what? Even when people don't have a baby, there are things that happen in life, even daily life, that we just don't pay attention, or we just maybe have other things that take priority than making sure that we're not making people like you uncomfortable with our weight.
I agree that its amazing when someone doesn't recognize dangerous weight gain. A few pounds here and there really don't matter (someone should tell the emaciated youth of today), but when someone borders on obesity, they need to really question what they are doing wrong and what they can do to fix their situation.
How would the average individual "diagnose" who does and who does not have "some kind of disease"? Lots of folks walk around with thyroid conditions, diabetes, etc and don't even know it.....
I think we should all accept who we are and who each other is. Be thankful for who you are; fat, skinny, tall, short, boring, unimaginative, or stupid....take it as it comes and if it comes with a piece of cheesecake, so be it..... :)

Depression was the reason I gained a lot of weight. I'll break it down for you:
1. Depression is genetic so I got it from my Mom's side of the family
2. Depression decreases the serotonin level in the brain (serotonin makes you able to rationalize...like every little thing isn't the end of the world)
3. Food (especially carbs) raise the serotonin level in your brain
So, it's a coping method. It's the same as drugs and alcohol.
It has NOTHING to do with someone just not caring, or just letting themselves get fat.
It's how they cope.
Luckily, I am fully recovered and have lost all the weight I gained.
I hope this answered your question : ]
Oh and depression doesn't directly make you fat. It can make you eat a lot, become an alcoholic, or become a drug addict.

Poor eating habits they learned growing up, and then not knowing how to use nutrition to there advantage. I used to be able to eat anything I wanted and not gain a pound, I have had 2 children and my metabolism has completely changed, and I am struggling to lose 50 pounds. I am trying to reteach myself good habits, after a life time of bad teachings. Dont judge, you never know someday you might get fat, your metabolism will start to slow down, and the pounds will creap on you and you wont notice at first, then bam someone will call you a fat *** and you will look at yourself and see those 50 pounds you never saw before.

I don't think they subconciously think that they are getting fat. With many people I know it came after having a few babies. They never got the weight off before they had another one. And with weight loss it take a lot of hard work and discipline that many people lack, much the same with people who smoke or do illegal drugs.

I don't know of any disease that causes anyone to become fat.
But take it from one who was 200lbs and now tops off at 345lbs.
Who could run a mile in 6 minutes 35seconds.
Who went from 6% to 43% Body fat.
Now going for the Lap Band
It's called Depression, lack of interest, stress, mood swings, negative reactions from the opposite sex, food cravings, low self confidence and esteem.

The answers are as varied as the people who find themselves in that situation. For me it was an injury that made it impossible to keep up my exercise regime which resulted in eating because I was depressed.

For some people its genetic and for others its the way they feel. Your emotions have a significant role in the way your body functions. why do you ask? are you looking to get super fat or something or just lose alot of weight?

It's not a matter of "letting yourself get fat". For some people, it's a battle against genetics. There are loads of other factors too.
