Well any thing that you use to straighten or perm your hair that you buy from the store will kill your hair. Been there done that. I'd definitely get it done professionaly otherwise you will regret it. It makes it so brittle and tangled you can hardly comb through it.

I really don't think that the picture of the black person the perm box will make a difference for your hair. The chemicals are reacting to the hair type and meant to do certain things to that hair type. Having African hair means that it is super curly and tight - what some call naps. This is 2 very different hair types and I strongly suggest you visit a professional.

Black people perm their hair and they relax it. Relaxing straitens it, perms make a different type of curl. Talk to a professional hairdresser and they can give you the best advice. Definitely do not try it yourself. Sometimes highlights because they are more porous tend to get damaged faster and may break if not done professionally.
Good Luck

I would not try it if I were you. Black People perms sometimes, make even Black People hair come out.
There are mild perms, if you just want to try it. I would do a small section of the hair and see how that does.

The best thing to do is ask a hairdresser. The next thing you can do is to find out the ingredients in this Yuko product and then go to a drugstore and compare it's ingredients to mild relaxers like Kiddie relaxers for black girls and texturizers which are even milder. Beware..your hair will lose it's luster and you'll have to use laminates from then on.

**** >>>> it might break because caucasion hair has a different texture than ethnic hair. don't do it yourself! but if you absoluetly have to - just use a regular perm to straighten it.... just without rolling and wrapping. it'll work fine. i did it on my hair while i was a hair stylist. apply the perming lotion to your hair - that must be moderalty wet, then comb through for about 5 or 10 minutes (make sure it stays wet!) - then rinse out until you don't have the odor anymore, then apply the 2nd bottle of conditioner and comb through about a minute (while still hair is still moist), then rinse, and don't shampoo for a few days. THIS WILL WORK if you are on a budget.******

It MAY work, but I suggest using the most mild formula you can find. You may run into problems since your hair is colored from the highlights, honestly, you should really see a hairdresser before you potentially botch your hair.

A relaxer? Trust me you have to do it, it's not just for black people, I did it and now my hair is straight and it looks so much better.
There is one designed for more fragile hair called Yuko, it is Asian hair straightening and also works but it is way expensive! About 600 dollars. I would just get a regular relaxer.
