Non-religious spirituality is about the inner being. About perceiving life as being more complex and important than yourself. About improving yourself, therefore improving your life by contemplation. Of freeing yourself of your ego and becoming the best person you can be. All this contemplation and inner work, is soothing and constructive and conducive to your mental health.

Spirituality does not need to be religious. It can be an exploration of yourself and about becoming a better human. Atheism is not about ignoring the better parts of what makes you a valuable human. It just takes religion out of the equation.

Mental health and spirituality are indeed interrelated. Believing and practicing spirituality frees the mind and is great for mental health.

Hmm...that is interesting, but I don't think I really have the answer. The definition I use for spirituality is that it is an interconnectedness with one's self, others, and the universe. That means, ANY person could be spiritual, regardless of mental health (or even religion/lack of religion.)

I do suppose that there are times when a person's spiritual view is affected due to what's going on in their heads. An example would be people that use hallucinagins as a way to seek enlightenment. Those drugs certainly do alter the way you view yourself, others, and beyond.

That all probably sounds like a bunch of rambling nonsense. You posed a very interesting question, and I thought I'd give it a shot. :)

A human being is made of body and flesh, (physical), brain, (mental and intellectual) and soul (spiritual). Only when all three are perfectly well balanced, can a human function at maximum efficiency! A lack in any of these three aspects of the individual could lead to mental health! for sure! The brain is the biggest and smartest of computers but needs to be programmed with true and accurate knowledge in order to be the best that it can be and provide the necessary solutions to all of the problems plaguing mankind today! Unless everything is just so! problems will occur and if only one aspect is deficient, the other two will suffer as a consequence! That's just the way God made us! Just as we must feed the body with good meals every day, so must we feed the brain with accurate knowledge and the spirit who can't live on bread alone! but on every utterance from the mouth of the Creator! as the truth of Him is what sets us free! and leads to us being and feeling whole and complete!

Well ones "spirituality" can affect one's mental health, either in a negative or positive way. That's the only way I can think of.

I certainly don't believe one needs to be spiritual to have good mental health. I actually think I am much happier since becoming an atheist.

It is possible that mental health and spirituality are interrelated. When spirituality becomes a rabid behavior, exhibited in extremem bigotry, intolerance, haughtiness, condescention, and a willingness to physically and socially harm others, then spirituality can be considered a diagnosable mental illness.

I think that spirituality helps some people stay calmer and more in control of life's uncertainties...I also believe that mental health is a great determiner of our physical health. My opinions only.

Spiritual people are happier, it is true. The human being needs something spiritual in their lives. Now go ahead and laugh and give thumbs down.

I wonder in all of the last 2000 years of mental illness has there ever been anyone who delusionally believed they were Jesus Christ but were atheist?

Somehow I highly doubt it.
