It depends on the dentist. I work for a dentist and he does 3 different things with it.
#1 Gives it to the patient after soking it in a cold sterile to kill bacteria.
#2 Throws it into the hazerdous waste.
#3 Sterilizes it and give it to the local dental school. If the tooth has decay in it, the dental school places the roots in plaster for dental students to learn how to place fillings. Or it can be used in teaching scaling and root planning, which is a procedure done to help with periodontitis.
I am a dental hygientist and when I was in dental school, I learned how to scale and root plane on these type of teeth.

I had 5 1/2 teeth pulled a really long time ago. The dentist gave me these tiny plastic treasure chests to put them in and then I took them home.

My dentist refused to give them to me, claiming it's against code now, and threw them into a hazardous waste container.
Good thing I was too old for the tooth fairy.

I depends on the dentist. If they pull out your tooth, most dentists give it back to you.

They may give your tooth to you if you would like to have it and ask for it. If you don't want your tooth and/or don't ask for it, they might possibly keep it to study (temporarily or otherwise) if they feel something useful might be learned -or- they may just discard the tooth.

HELLO,
MUCH DEPENDS ON THE DENTIST. AS A DENTAL STUDENT I REMEMBER VISITING SEVERAL DENTISTS OR ORAL SURGEONS TO FIND EXTRACTED ADULT TEETH FOR MY CLASSES.
MANY WOULD HAVE THEM SOAKING IN STERILIZING SOLUTION HOPING SOME DENTAL STUDENT MAY NEED THEM.
FOR DECIDUOUS TEETH AFTER BEING WIPED WITH DISINFECTING SOLUTION, THESE WERE USUALLY GIVEN BACK TO CHILDREN THAT REQUESTED THEM.
