I replaced the battery then the new one died so then I figured it was the genorater , so I put a new one on. I jumped it off and left it running for a while but battery got weaker instead of stronger. What else could cause this problem? THANKS!

First check to make sure the new generator is grounded properly. If you have an ohmmeter check for continuity from where the wires attach to the generator to the other end of the harness. If you can't get all the way to the other end you can use a regular sewing needle or stick pin to put into the wiring and then touch the leads to it. This will not let enough oxygen in to hurt the wiring but will let you check to see if the wiring has a break which is highly possible. Also make sure your ground straps are secure. The engine should be grounded to the body. If this is ok check your regulator out. It ultimately regulates the amount of voltage that is allowed to generate back into the system from the generator as it will produce more at higher speeds. The regulator should let the charge coming back to the battery be about 13.5 volts.. To make sure your system is working on a vehicle that old you can take one of the battery posts loose from the battery, preferably the negative, while it is running and it should continue to run. If the engine dies out the car isn't charging and you need to keep looking for the problem. Lastly, don't assume your new generator is good if you bought it from some of the big guys parts stores as lots of big stores buy rebuilt parts and new parts that are not up to standard at cheaper prices so they can brag on their cheap prices. It isn't uncommon to see new electrical parts and pumps defective when new.

Your confirmation that the voltage on the battery terminals is different from the reading shown on the in-car voltmeter indicates you may have a faulty ground somewhere. Maybe the wiring to the meter has a problem. Disconnect it and check again.

Does the warning light come on with the engine running at idle speed. If so you have the old dynamo which is so obsolete. Was not until after '72 that beetles began to be fitted with alternators of a larger diameter than the dynamo that will lead to hassles with the mounting pillar, fuel pump and possibly fouling the distributor. There are aftermarket alternators available that will fit the original mounting.

Voltage regulator or a loose belt. Also, how do you know if the battery is any good?
