If you believe that there is no God but God and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of God, then by making that statement with sincerity you are indeed a Muslim. From that point on, it's a matter of learning and practicing!

Not true, anyone can say those words and not being a Muslim. Words are carried away by the wind, words are not valid. If a person does not feel, think, and belief as a Muslim, is not a Muslim.

I thought the preferred method was to say this in Arabic:
Ashadu inna la' ilaha illa Allah wa Muhammad rasulu Allah.
(same as above) Incidentally - capital bad idea since if you later apostasize, you are to be killed and your murderer is promised heaven with 72 virgins.

yes, it doesn't matter if you really mean it or not. this is why people are not allowed in most muslim countries to switch their religion without going before a tribunal to explain their reason or facing death....it also explains why someone has to convert to islam to marry a muslim. it doesn't matter if you believe what they say, they just want the numbers. it's a numbers game with them.
